Yesterday I traveled fifty miles down Highway Seventeen and spent part of my day with Joe Morris and his grass fed cows in Watsonville, California. It was gorgeous, and such a refreshing experience! In golf we have a saying, Keep It Simple Stupid. Joe Morris and Morris Grassfed Beef keep it simple.
Though that doesn't seem novel on first glance, in today's industrial-fed America, it is. But, don't confuse simple with easy. Corn-fed beef is easy, profit is their only concern.
Simple is raising cows the way it's sustainably been done for centuries. Morris uses a holistic approach that considers more than profit. They're focused on what's best for: the cows, the environment, community, the health of the consumer, and the grass.
So CyClone Dairy was a joke after all. I got an email yesterday from Michael Hansen suggesting that it was an April Fools joke. He might have known the truth already (Ben & Jerrys let it leak a day early to a few people - NOT including me) but he added that people just don't want to eat clones and therefore NO company in its right mind would actually advertise milk from clones.
What did Ben & Jerry's have to say about it?
April Fools! Ben & Jerry's launched a fictitious dairy company called "Cyclone Dairy" - selling milk made from 100% cloned cows in March 2009. CyClone Dairy isn't real, but it could be! Did you know that in January 2008, the U.S Food and Drug Administration declared milk and meat from cloned animals safe for human consumption, allowing cloned food products to enter the U.S. food supply?
We believe you should have the right to choose which foods you eat - and not to eat cloned foods if you don't want to. And that's why Ben & Jerry's believes we need a national clone tracking system, so people and companies can know where their food is coming from.
We recognize that we may have duped a few allies - if so, thanks for your genuine outrage!
My recommendation: Check out this video of Ben & Jerry's trying to give fake "CyClone Dairy" free samples to consumers. The reactions from the consumers are pretty priceless. You can also check out Ben & Jerry's press release.
By the way - here's the part that's NOT a joke. As you can see in this article cloned cows are already used in our food supply. So if you don't want to drink milk from clones, it might be too late.
A number of major U.S. food producers have announced that they will not use any ingredients derived from cloned animals, due in part to safety concerns. Companies enforcing a ban on clone products include Smithfield Foods, General Mills, Campbell Soup, Nestle, California Pizza Kitchen, Supervalu, Kraft Foods and Tyson Foods, the largest meat company in the United States.
Kraft said that consumer demand influenced its decision.
Consumer demand? What, you mean you don't want to eat a nice, tasty clone? Oh darn.
And you're not interested in deregulating GE corn either? But it's a new variety by DuPont that can survive multiple herbicides (both Roundup and another type known as ALS inhibitors)! That means we can spray more pesticides. Better yet, it wasn't even adequately evaluated by the Bush USDA. Sure you're not interested? Take Action Here. BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine scientists have found a way to make cows produce more milk by injecting them with a bovine growth hormone produced by cloned and genetically modified dairy cows.
Synthetic bovine somatotropin, which is also called rbST, is already injected into cows to boost milk production, but Argentine researchers say their method is cheaper and produces a natural bovine
