A man sues Denny's over high salt food. Apparently, some meals contain more salt than you should eat in two days. The lawsuit asks that Denny's list sodium amounts on the menu and warn of health risks. (More on this from Marion Nestle here)
Recently disclosed documents show that Canada used the WTO to pressure the US and successfully water own our Country of Origin Labeling (COOL). (See for yourself: Letter from US to Canada and Response from Canada to US)
I feel so split about these types of plans to use factory farm waste to generate power. I have read other pieces about chicken poop power generation (this one is about dairy) but haven't reported them because I just can't see it as a good thing when we find a way for factory farms to justify their existence (and be ever so slightly less toxic). And yet, I suppose it's better to produce energy with all the poop instead of letting it sit in a lagoon and stink.
Good food safety news from the USDA. (Yeah, maybe sit down as you read that... it is a little shocking.) They are now testing bench trim for E. coli - that's a cut of beef that previously wasn't tested.
The other day I noted that the Humane Society was congratulating Wendy's for switching a mere 2% of their eggs to cage-free. Turns out Wendy's isn't alone. Burger King, Hardee's, Quizno's, Carl's Jr. and Denny's are each going to buy about 5% of their eggs as cage-free. I interpret this as a "shut up and get off my back" move by the fast food chains to placate the Humane Society without getting bad press and protests at their restaurants. It seems that McDonald's wasn't even willing to go that far to get HSUS to back off - they'd rather "study the issue" for 2 years first.
In fact, the VP of Corporate Social Responsibility at McDonald's had the chutzpah to say "I have been to our laying facilities and I am proud of them. The birds are protected well." Protected by cramming 10 of them into each battery cage, giving each hen less room than a sheet of paper? Oh they are protected all right. In huge, windowless rooms with 100% protection from the elements and from coyotes or any other critter that might want to harm a chicken. You might say that prisoners in maximum security prisons are "protected well" too.
Quite frankly, I'm disappointed that the Humane Society is going to settle for this - any of this. If they care about the chickens so much, don't they care enough to keep negotiating for more than just a 5% switch?
Let these restaurants know that we can spot hypocrisy when we see it:
I skipped out on the Super Bowl, so I didn't see the Dennys ad offering up free food. Or as Grist more accurately calls it, free corn with a side of petroleum. Here's what they had to say about the free giveaway of the two eggs, two sausages, two slices of bacon, and two pancake breakfast:
The Denny's stunt is, well, really a sad statement about the American way of food. Fast food chains are part of a vast system of agriculture and industrial processing that is made possible by one thing and one thing only -- cheap oil. It's cheap fuel that powers the synthetic fertilizer that nourishes the thousands of acres of corn planted and harvested by a a handful of combine drivers. Cheap gas transports that corn to factory farms to feed poultry and livestock that are then processed and trucked across the country to the nearest store. It's a system that pumps tons and tons of CO2 and methane into the atmosphere every day, harming the climate every day.
And the result? Customers lined up for their free 770 calories and 44 grams of fat. Does that calorie count include the high fructose corn syrup masquerading as maple syrup that people dump on their pancakes?
