This is an old story from back in September, but I am posting it because I think it's telling about the state of the dairy industry. It's very, VERY sad. Dennis Wolff, former Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture, made the news September 30, 2009 for evicting the tenant farmers on his property.
Dennis Wolff has resigned as PA's Secretary of Agriculture. Does anyone know where I can get some organic champagne to celebrate?
Wolff, a dairy farmer, made national headlines when he tried to ban rbGH-free labels on milk in Pennsylvania. This measure was met by widespread popular outcry, leading PA Gov Rendell to overturn it. More recently, Wolff's name has been tossed around as a possible USDA appointee in the Obama administration. We seem to be in the clear, at least for now - he says he's pursuing opportunities in the private sector. I'm sure he won't be doing anything good. Let's keep an eye on Wolff and see what he does.
When I saw the relatively good appointment for Deputy Under Secretary of Food Safety at the USDA, I wondered: "Are they going to balance this out with an incredibly bad Under Secretary of Food Safety?" Turns out, that answer might be yes. Rumor has it that Dennis Wolff, the Big Ag Shill in charge of Pennsylvania's Dept of Ag is a finalist for the job. I cannot imagine a worse person to put in a position of power over our meat - except perhaps KFC's Colonel.

Congratulations are in order to Tom Vilsack today. As I predicted, the Senate confirmed him as Secretary of Agriculture by a unanimous vote. The same measure, approved shortly after Barack Obama's inauguration, also confirmed five of the new president's other appointees: Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and White House Budget Office director Peter Orszag.
His critics see Vilsack as "coming from only part of agriculture, and I don't think that probably is accurate," Hamilton said in an interview after Vilsack's Senate confirmation hearing last week. Hamilton, who has long been an advocate of locally grown food systems, a priority of Vilsack's critics, attended the hearing and chatted with the former governor afterward.
Hamilton persuaded Vilsack as governor to form a state food policy council to promote local food systems, among other ideas.
Vilsack couldn't have been expected to be anything but an advocate of biotechnology or ethanol when he was governor. "It would have been hard to be the governor of Iowa, just as it's hard to be the senator from Illinois, without being a supporter of ethanol," Hamilton said in a reference to Obama, a leading supporter of corn ethanol as an Illinois senator.
"The fact that you can see a role for genetic modification and science in agriculture doesn't necessarily mean you don't also see an opportunity for local food and organic" agriculture, Hamilton continued. [...]
Hamilton said he is "very confident that whether it's a year, two years, or four years, that most of the people" who signed the Food Democracy Now! petition "will be impressed and pleased" with Vilsack.
Hamilton was one of the six potential nominees for secretary of agriculture on the Food Democracy Now! petition. He is also one of the "sustainable dozen" that Food Democracy Now! is recommending for undersecretary posts within the USDA.
Those senior appointments will set the tone for Vilsack's tenure. I have no idea whether any of the "sustainable dozen" have a chance to be hired. Unfortunately, Jill Richardson reported recently that some strong advocates for industrial agriculture are being considered for high-ranking USDA positions.
For now I am willing to give Vilsack the benefit of the doubt. I greatly respect Hamilton, who knows the Iowa governor well.
We've already got Tom Vilsack as the head of the USDA, but the Vilsack USDA will also be incredibly influenced by the Deputy Secretary. And I have bad news about that that requires immediate action by all progressives.
As you know, I've been advocating the "Sustainable Dozen" chosen by Food Democracy Now (go there and sign their petition!) as candidates for USDA Deputy Secretary and Under Secretary positions. Several of these Sustainable Dozen, including Chuck Hassebrook were being seriously considered. And then... a few DC-type people spoke up against him. What??? This election was a victory for CHANGE. So why is anyone being heeded when they advocate an anti-change agenda??
The names now up for Deputy USDA Secretary are nasty pro-industrial ag, anti-sustainable ag people like the Big Bad Dennis Wolff of Pennsylvania. Wolff is known for unilaterally deciding that Pennsylvanians do not have a right to know whether their milk has artificial growth hormones in it or not (a policy that was thankfully overturned by the PA governor after much consumer outcry).
Furthermore, Joy Philippi, former past president of the National Pork Producers Council, co-chair the Rural Americans for Hillary is being considered for an under secretary position. The National Pork Producers Council is the lobby group for hog factory farms. That means we'd be installing the fox in the henhouse every bit as completely as Bush did during his eight years. Again, this is going against what Obama promised us, as he has promised to have an administration free of lobbyists.
Putting Dennis Wolff or others like him in as the #2 at the USDA would be an end to any hope for change in American agriculture during Obama's time as President. And if this election was a victory for Hope and Change, then choosing Wolff as Deputy Secretary (or another person with similar ideas as him) would directly violate what the people of this great country voted for on November 4.
Write your Senator and Representative today. The best thing you can do right now is to send an email or a fax (as opposed to calling or sending snail mail). You can find your Representative here and your Senator here. Ask them to speak to the Obama transition team about this. Ask them to support reform candidates like Chuck Hassebrook or others in the Sustainable Dozen for USDA Deputy Secretary and to oppose anti-sustainable ag candidates like Dennis Wolff.

The Washington Post put out a short list for Obama's Secretary of Agriculture today. Emphasis on the word "short." The list we've been working with thus far that included names like Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin and Tom Buis is now down to three names. Including two BAD names: Charles Stenholm (Ag Whore), and Dennis Wolff (Evildoer). The third option is Kathleen Sebelius, Governor of Kansas.
ACTION: GO WEIGH IN at Change.gov. Details on each of these people are below. I think the least bad is Kathleen Sebelius so IF these are the 3 choices then I'd go for her.
After all that's gone on this week, I thought my life couldn't get any more unbelievable. But it looks like it might. We fought to get Obama elected and we won by a landslide. We've got a mandate. And what has our mandate earned us? A cabinet that gets Joe Lieberman's seal of approval. Yuck.
Well now it gets worse. There's been quite a bit of speculation over the new Ag Secretary and we've learned a little bit. Collin Peterson (D-MN) and Tom Vilsack aren't in the running, it would seem. Hallelujah. Although it seems like other than Vilsack's support of biotech he might not be a bad guy. Not that it matters if he's out of the running.
But who is in the running? A name has surfaced that no one initially suspected. Dennis Wolff, evil Secretary of Agriculture in the great state of Pennsylvania. And it looks like he might get the job.
Today's dose of Tom Philpott brings word that Obama's graciously invited a well-known "fox" to serve on his transition team. How will the henhouse ever be safe now?
The transition named its "team members" looking at energy and natural resources agencies, which includes USDA. The list includes Michael R. Taylor, a man who spent his career bouncing between the employ of GMO-seed giant Monsanto and Bill Clinton's FDA and USDA. Taylor is widely credited with ushering Monsanto's recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) through the FDA regulatory process and into the milk supply.
