Colony Collapse Disorder

Scientists isolate one cause of "colony collapse disorder"

by: desmoinesdem

Sun Apr 19, 2009 at 17:47:24 PM PDT

Scientists in Spain isolated a parasitic fungus as the cause of "colony collapse disorder" in some honeybee hives, and were able to treat the affected colonies successfully with anti-fungals. That's good news for the human race, since we depend on bees to pollinate a wide variety of food crops.

It's too early to say "case closed" on the honeybee die-offs. In all likelihood more than one factor has contributed to colony collapse disorder. Devilstower laid out seven possibilities in this diary.

Several European countries have banned the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in order to protect honeybees. Beyond Pesticides and Pesticide Action Network North America sent an open letter to President Barack Obama earlier this year calling for more regulation of pesticides, putting a high priority on protecting bees and other pollinators.

To my knowledge, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has not taken any steps in this direction--that is, I have been unable to find any reports on new USDA plans to fund research regarding pesticides and pollinators. The Bush USDA refused to halt or even thoroughly study the use of neonicotinoid pesticides.

I did find out that the "USDA will be providing two types of parasite-resistant honey bees developed by USDA scientists" to pollinate plants in the organic White House garden.

Every Third Bite

by: asimbagirl

Mon Feb 16, 2009 at 15:11:46 PM PST

Last summer, while getting ready for Netroots Nation, I had the extreme good fortune of speaking with Participant Media's Wendy Cohen. We were chatting back and forth via email about getting her org's item for the registration bags to the right place in Austin. This was a project that I was in charge of. (And the therapy's working great! I've almost completely shed the nightmares of stuffing thousands of orange bags...)

At any rate, during our email conversations, I learned that Wendy had recently produced her first documentary short, about honeybees. She sent me a link to her film, and I have to tell you, watching this short 9 minute documentary did change my life.

More, including a link to her documentary, below.

Bee Aware, Beware!

(Bees matter. - promoted by Asinus Asinum Fricat)

We garden, both vegetables and flowers, and have for many years.  Some years, the yields are great, some years not so much; such it is with gardening.  Sometimes it's the weather and sometimes it's the deer (once a moose!) that have clobbered our garden.  Ordinarily, on average, we do pretty well.  That isn't true this year.

Bayer Sued For Murder (of Bees)

by: Jill Richardson

Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 11:00:00 AM PDT

I just love it when other countries do what America won't do. In this case, a German group, Coalition Against Bayer Dangers, filed a suit against Bayer CropScience for killing the bees.

The group accuses Bayer CropScience of "marketing dangerous pesticides and thereby accepting the mass death of bees all over the world."

The coalition filed the charge in cooperation with German beekeepers who claim they lost thousands of hives after poisoning by the Bayer pesticide clothianidin in May.

Details below.
