I wrote a friend in Wisconsin, asking for more information on the proposed enormous dairy in Rosendale. Here's what he had to say (below). If you live in Wisconsin and you want to do something about this, please write a letter to the Governor and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.

A guest post by Maine farmer Eliot Coleman over at Grist got under my skin today. With a provocative title -- "Debunking the meat/climate change myth" -- and a maddening lack of focus and specificity, he eventually comes to the point that it isn't meat that adds to the climate crisis, but the industrial agriculture system. Although much of the piece drove me crazy, I can't argue with his overall conclusion that much of the meat's climate change impact can be placed at the feet of industrial agriculture and our nation-spanning food system. Items like the production of soy and corn using chemical fertilizer (emission of N2O), transporting feed and animals (emission of CO2), use of machines (CO2), and so on, contribute a significant amount to the carbon footprint of meat.

This is disgusting in more ways than just the obvious -
A state agency is having 4.5 million gallons of manure removed from an eastern Indiana hog farm that went out of business after being prosecuted for violating environmental laws.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management faces a possible $400,000 bill to have the manure shipped and treated at an Indianapolis sewage plant, although an agency spokesman said it is seeking payment from the current property owners.

From the NYT:
"Swine flu is a misnomer," said C. Larry Pope, the chief executive of Smithfield Foods, who said he feared panic among consumers. "They need to be concerned about influenza, but not eating pork."
(italics mine)
Given the possibility that the outbreak may be related to a stinky CAFO partly owned by Smithfield Foods, I'm thinking Mr. Pope should be more concerned about public anger than about a drop in sales due to public panic.
Just sayin'
