I took some time last week to go to my local health store and the two pharmacies to check what kind of supplements loiter on their shelves. Then I visited all the supermarkets. I have to say that I was left a little perplexed by the non quality of most supplements I've found. Most vitamin products (particularly those sold in health food stores & supermarkets) contain synthetic vitamin powders, also known as junk vitamins.
Digging a little further and checking what's available online it is worth noting at least 90% of all vitamins sold in the U.S. are synthetic. There are only a few manufacturers of vitamin powders, and they are almost always large pharmaceutical companies. Many of today's vitamin and mineral supplements are made synthetically through chemical processes, rather than derived directly from plants or other materials. Some manufacturers do make supplements directly from natural sources, and claim that these vitamins are superior in quality to their synthetic cousins.
Americans are now spending more than $20 billion a year on supplements for health and wellness.

(Both Jill & I asked GANJA to write the diary about type 2 diabetes, and here it is! - promoted by Asinus Asinum Fricat)
First diary here. I am sure that there is a whole lot of stuff that will occur to me right after I push the go button that I will wish I had included. Since I cannot wait to find out what those things are...
I can't guarantee to any of you that you can be diet controlled, but that's not the ultimate goal. I don't think that it needs to be, but you must give it your best shot. My advice is probably best suited to those of you who've been recently diagnosed. Personally, I spent nearly 5 years on Glucophage XR before I finally got my shit together. I am not suggesting that getting your shit together is all you need to do to accomplish your goals. That was what i needed. Your mileage may vary.
I'm no expert, and I expect to get as much out of this as you do. I'm not trying to usurp the authority of your physician. What they say definitely has top priority.

(Thanks to LA Locavore for this fantastic diary! - promoted by Jill Richardson)
Barack Obama is inheriting Ag policies and food safety policies that have been the subject of huge debates for years, and the FDA has just pulled off a whopper of a policy reversal to add to the mix. They're following the lead of other Bush regulatory bodies, which are scrambling to codify old policies in the Lame Duck microseconds that remain before Obama takes office, but FDA's stealth reversal stands to permanently alter the US food chain and profoundly endanger public health.

A couple of days ago I wrote this diary and copped quite a few unkind comments, mostly from misinformed posters and a handful of hardcore denialists. Yet the problems persist, and shooting the messenger rarely helps. But I'm a tough cookie, comfortable in the knowledge of what I know and write about and in this diary I'm basically tackling the same issues albeit from a different angle: "Big Pharma" and the multinational junk & processed foods companies ("Big Food") which, worldwide, make gigantic profits on the back of unsuspecting consumers, specifically marketing non-nutritious food appealing to children and adults alike via disingenuous advertising.
Obesity, though some would prefer to call it eating disorders, is a big growth area, not just for the unwitting sufferers, but also for some food companies which contributes so greatly to the problem. "Big Pharma" which works in tandem with "Big Food" would love to "terminate" its main source of competition: the natural products industry and the organic movement.
