Assholes You Should Know: Rick Berman

by: Jill Richardson

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 08:00:00 AM PDT

Many people who make our food system what it is are well-meaning - even if they are peddling junk. Sometimes people just never really thought things through, or they don't realize the harm foods can cause to human health or to the environment. Rick Berman is NOT well-meaning. And you should know his name. When Berman or his groups, the Center for Consumer Freedom, the Guest Choice Network, the Employment Policies Institute (which includes the site Center for Union Facts), and the American Beverage Institute, pop up in the news, we'll want to be ready with some good letters to the editor to send in to any paper that quotes him as a legitimate source of information.

I'd like to do this as a diary series, and I invite everyone here to join me in writing about other bigtime assholes whose names we should know - Terry Etherton (pro-rBGH blogger extraordinaire) and Dale Bauman (pro-rBGH scientific prostitute for Monsanto), etc. For some gooood info, check out the site Sourcewatch.

Jill Richardson :: Assholes You Should Know: Rick Berman
I've got a problem with Berman on a personal level as he opposed the Americans with Disabilities Act, a law that saves my butt daily. I can do my job just fine but I need a bit of understanding from my employer due to my migraines. Thanks to the ADA, my employers are required to accommodate me so long as I can do my job with reasonable accommodations. Berman said (re: the ADA):

"The ADA in its present form will cost our industry untold millions in added construction and labor costs" He begins the article with a reference to the ADA and AIDS. He stated, "Congress ... is seriously considering passage of a new law that would require employers to ignore AIDS infections among cooks and servers."

Berman uses the Center for Consumer Freedom to do the dirty work that its member corporations won't do themselves. Because membership is secret, he can sink incredibly low without damaging their reputations or brand images. When someone DID find out which companies gave CCF money, they found this list (found in Appetite for Profit by Michele Simon):

Applebee's International
Dean Foods Company
Excel/Cargill
Pilgrim's Pride
Perdue Farms
Coca-Cola Company
Outback Steakhouse
Wendy's International

The Sourcewatch site includes more donors to Berman frontgroups - a list with names you might know like Ruby Tuesdays, Monsanto, Tyson, White Castle, P.F. Changs, Marie Callendar Pie Shops, Max & Erma's Restaurants, Good Humor/Breyer's Ice Cream, Harrah's, Eli's Cheesecake, and Ruth's Chris Steak House.

Berman has proudly stated that his tactic is to shoot the messenger - discredit anyone who criticizes junk food, tobacco, and booze instead of taking on their message on its merits. In her book, Simon also lists the following "radical" groups that CCF has attacked:

Action on Smoking and Health
American Medical Assocation
American Corn Growers Association
Center for Food Safety
Center for Science in the Public Interest
Consumer Federation of America
Earth Island Institute
Friends of the Earth
Harvard School of Public Health
Mothers Against Drunk Driving
National Association of High School Principals
Organic Consumers Association
Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Oh yeah, cuz MADD and the CDC are the great Satans that are ruining this country. One way they like to attack these groups is by registering domain names for websites very similar to the groups' real sites or real names. He also likes to "expose" where non-profit groups get their funding (more info here).

Another project of Berman's is the FishScam website - a site that argues that levels of mercury in fish are JUST FINE. It's not that hard to prove him wrong there... I like the Environmental Defense and the Environmental Working Group sites.

And there's the pro-obesity campaign he ran:

That ad ran in major newspapers in 2006. Good one, huh?

For much more info about CCF and their tactics and history, I strongly recommend getting a copy of Appetite for Profit if you haven't done so already. Then set up a Google Alert so you get an email whenever Mr. Berman weasels his way into the news.

Absolutely... (4.00 / 2)
Berman = Dick, in more ways than one...

It would be great to have one of "him" on our own side, and I'd volunteer to be so myself; but the problem there is that I actually believe in facts and whatnot, so I could never quite rise to the level of complete tool-ish idiocy that he resides on every day.

......................

Fantastic title, Jill!

But at the same time, let's also try not to smear everyday run-of-the-mill assholes with associations to primitive slime like Dick Berman...

Heh.

run of the mill assholes? (4.00 / 2)
I was thinking Terry Etherton & Dale Bauman. After that I'm open to ideas but those are my top 3 in this category.

Well, there's also... (4.00 / 2)
the dipshit who tried to run me over as I walked with the signal across 39th at Division the other day - who screamed something at me about wanting to fight or something, but who in the end as I welcomed his 'challenge' of course ended up driving away, mumbling under his breath.

Now that I think about it, he kinda looked like Dick Berman...

Let's not overlook Michael Fumento! (4.00 / 3)
Don't be fooled into buying "BioEvolution", a book by Michael Fumento, a writer who got $60,000 from Monsanto to sing its praises: he listed some of the products Monsanto has on tap, such as drought-resistant corn, crops that could reduce the need for environment-damaging fertilizers, and soybeans that might reduce heart disease etc...where have I heard that kind of story before?

He may be the archetype.  A cloacal aperture of gigantic proportions.

OMG, bees are cool.

Great candidate! (4.00 / 4)
Hard to argue with the assholishnes of the CATO Institute hack who strongly supports cancer and Mad Cow Disease...

Meaning ... (4.00 / 2)
I just think the acronym would be fun ...

OMG, bees are cool.

Side topic ... (4.00 / 4)
... I'd like to note that Dean Foods, which has funded Berman's CCF, is the company that owns the Horizon Organic dairy and Silk/White Wave soyfoods brands.

I wouldn't touch 'em anymore with a ten-foot pole.  Which is a bummer to say, since for a lot of years White Wave was a great Boulder-based company.  I even had a college job with 'em.

Horizon Organic and White Wave/Silk now officially suck.

OMG, bees are cool.

Agreed, agreed (4.00 / 4)
and I think if you go poking around there's even a Dean-George W. Bush connection. I'd have to go back to the person who told me that to get the exact details but when a federal investigation of dairy price manipulation reached Dean the investigation mysteriously stopped because of the Bush ties.

So many assholes...so little time (4.00 / 2)
A big part of what happens is the assholes infiltrate environmental and other progressive groups. The founder of Greenpeace is an example.

Patrick Moore: http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind...

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04...

This group is doing a lot to counter the so-called "clean" nuclear energy movement headed by a bunch of former "environmentalists" i.e. corporate sellouts.

http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind...

Who is that guy who was a leading nuclear resistor for decades then sold out and became their top lobbyist???

Why Canada would want to take the lead of the US on anything is beyond me. They should see how badly we f@#ked up things here and to the exact opposite.
