Here are a few stories keeping my life interesting today:

  • San Diego's citrus and avocado industries may be in trouble. The reason? Water. Or, rather, lack of water.

  • Interested in studying gastronomy in Italy? You get to gorge yourself on fine wines and cheese in Italy and get a college degree for it. Nice! Last week I met up with the university's David Szanto while he was in L.A. I have to admit, I might not be ready to pack my bags for Italia but I sure am jealous!

  • Sustainable Table gives instructions to make your own yogurt. OK, now I am seriously sad I don't know of any local dairies near me. Homemade yogurt looks yummy. Hat tip to Natasha Chart for this.

  • Civil Eats celebrates National Eat the Stuff in our Freezers and Pantry Week. I'm not sure I can celebrate. Do cashews and dried beans go stale if they've been sitting on a shelf for 2-4 years?

  • Marion Nestle went to see Food, Inc and she gives it two thumbs up. I've only seen clips and heard a talk by the director and stars Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan about the making of the movie. It's going to be a BIG DEAL when this comes out.

  • Grist answers the question "Can you compost tainted food?" Their answer, in short, is NO. If you've got food that's been recalled due to salmonella or other toxic microbes, throw that shit away!

  • Chef Kurt Michael Friese isn't done yet picking on KFC's cheap chicken ads. He says they hide the true cost of the food. It's a pretty funny take on the ad, especially when he goes into the fine print and translates it from lawyer into English. "The chicken is fresh, except for when it's not." Yum. (Here's his previous commentary on KFC ads.)

  • Check out this article about a foodie who gleans the Bay Area's unwanted fruit, herbs, and nuts from residential trees.

  • The Ethicurean tells about volunteering at a free lunch program in New England. It's a really well-written and touching story from a first-person point of view. I definitely recommend taking a look, especially if you've ever considered volunteering yourself.

Love the KFC piece!

Errrr, actually - let me clarify that.  I love Chef Kurt Michael Friese's Grist column on the KFC ads.  I will have nothing to do with KFC pieces in any other way, shape or form...

Reminds me of something I saw today.  I got off the bus downtown earlier this morning and a bold, bright and colorful sticker on the door of a convenience store on SW 4th caught my eye - it said something like "Fresh foods available here!".

Yeah, right.  "Fresh foods" don't come in packages with 300 word ingredient lists and "expiration dates" well into next decade...

It's pretty common stuff.

I made yogurt recently by putting some ultra pasteurized milk in a Salton yogurt maker with a little live yogurt, and it indeed did make yogurt by sometime the next day. You don't even need the yogurt maker, you can do it on top of your television.

If you use regular milk, you have to heat the milk first. 145oF I think.

I can't see cheesecloth being a necessity.

they thought it got into the peanut butter from bird excrement. Chicken manure is often composted and used as a soil amendment.

I really don't see where Grist is coming from with this. I do think, though, that people need to be careful about what they put on/around vegetables to some extent, not to mention what's pooping on it - if bird shit can have salmonella in it, you'd better be careful about cleaning your spinach. I actually do get grackles hanging around my spinach patch a lot.

that I'd have been nearly six months ahead of the LA Times on getting a gastronomic degree in Italy.  Given the drudgery of things here, I'd go off to study food culture and food tourism in a heartbeat now!

And pardon if this has already been addressed elsewhere, but today's New York Times has an article in the dining section, "It's Organic, but Does That Mean It's Safer?".  Honestly, I haven't even had time to read it yet, so I can't say whether it's good, bad, or ugly reporting.

The closing gives it away -

Emily Wyckoff, who lives in Buffalo, buys local food and cooks from scratch as much as possible. Although she still buys organic milk and organic peanut butter for her three children, the organic label means less to her these days - especially when it comes to processed food in packages like crackers and cookies.

"I want to care, but you have to draw the line," she said.

But the line stops when it comes to basic food safety.

Recently, a sign near the Peter Pan and Skippy at her local grocery store declared that those brands were safe from peanut contamination. There was no similar sign near her regular organic brand.

"I bought the national brand," she said. "Isn't that funny?"

I'm assuming that was in a supermarket, then?  Yeah, because large chain supermarkets have never been known to give preferential treatment, shelf space, displays and special in-store advertising considerations to the giant food manufacturers...

And btw, how do the failings of PCA and a private organic certifier possibly reflect badly upon "buying local food and cooking from scratch"?

Ironic that they also mention Peter Pan - being that they are the original salmonella peanut butter company, after all...

Homemade yogurt is easy and good (4.00 / 1)
especially with homemade granola, fruit from a CSA share etc. My sister gave me a recipe book for yogurt dishes, so hopefully I'll be expanding how I use it. Lots of yummy looking recipes. I use creamline milk (use the same milk for ice cream!) from a local dairy.
