Maple Leaf Foods Wants Their Wieners Back

Maple Leaf Foods, again.  Listeria, again -

Maple Leaf Foods has voluntarily recalled hundreds of cases of wieners that had not completed tests for the listeria bacteria species.

Smith said 1,100 cases of wieners were quarantined for a second round of testing at a plant in Hamilton, Ont., but they were mistakenly shipped out prematurely. Initial testing revealed a partial positive result for a the listeria species, Smith said. Maple Leaf says it tests for all six listeria species, not just Listeria monocytogenes.

It is not known whether the recalled wieners have tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a species that can be fatal in humans and was blamed for last year's deadly listeriosis outbreak.

A bit more, and the list of recalled products below the fold...

How does something ship out if it's quarantined?  Wouldn't it make sense to store potentially deadly food products in a place where there would never be a chance they could mistakenly be released?

Will we ever learn?

Last year, 20 people died after eating listeria-tainted Maple Leaf meat. The company issued a massive recall that started on Aug. 17, 2008 and resulted in new standards of food-safety testing when the plant continued operations.

Here is the list of recalled products, all of which were shipped throughout Eastern Canada -

Two products - Shopsy's Deli Fresh All Beef Frankfurters and Maple Leaf Hot Dogs Original - are affected by the recall, but pose a minimal risk to human health, the company said. No illnesses have been reported.

The Shopsy's product bears product code 20730 and UPC 6487520730, with best-before dates of April 22 and April 23. The Maple Leaf hot dogs have product code 22356 and UPC 6310022356 with a best-before date of April 23.

man, this company is just bad news, isn't it? (4.00 / 3)
Fortunately, I'm fairly immune to hot dogs.

I'd really love it if someone would tell me bad things about Johnsonville Brats, though. They're a weakness in the household. Hubbs loves them.

Absolutely... (4.00 / 2)
And some of the quotes in that article really give you pause.

Maple Leaf Foods now claims to be the "industry leader in safety" after their outbreak last year...and it's still that easy for them to 'mistakenly' ship out poisoned products into the food supply?  Whoops?

If we take them at their word, what does the rest of the food industry look like up there?  Of course they're just puffing themselves up though, PCA used that "industry leader" line a few times as well...

Well, the town of Johnsonville was named after Andrew Johnson, who's right down there with Dubya as the worst president in history.  If that's any consolation to you?
