Kenya Diaries: Day 16, Part 1 - Welcome to Bondo

by: Jill Richardson

Mon Mar 05, 2012 at 21:44:09 PM PST

I spent the last week of my trip in Nyanza Province, near Lake Victoria, in the southwestern corner of Kenya. Here, I visited Amy Lint and Malaki Obado, a couple who met and married in Kenya and then lived for several years in the U.S. They recently moved back to Kenya, to a village called Nyakasumbi in Bondo District where Malaki grew up, to found a non-profit called Grow Strong. When I visited, they showed me around.

Kenya Diaries: Day 11, Part 4 - Interview with a Maasai Man, Part 3

by: Jill Richardson

Mon Mar 05, 2012 at 20:21:05 PM PST

This post covers the last 20 minutes of my conversation with Sidney, a Maasai man who was kind enough to speak to me at his home in Kajiado, Kenya. Previous parts of this interview can be read here and here.

Sidney with two Maasai women and me. The women dressed me up like a proper Maasai.

Mon Mar 05, 2012 at 16:44:01 PM PST

I spent the eleventh day of my trip with a Maasai family in the town of Kajiado (or just outside it perhaps) in Rift Valley Province. First, I met with a Maasai man named Sidney and we spoke for about an hour before heading out to see his uncle, who lives in a traditional Maasai home. This is the second part of our conversation, transcribed below. In it he speaks about the climate crisis, changes in the breeds kept by the Maasai, and about the Maasai diet.

Kenya Diaries: Day 11 - Intro to Pastoralism and Maasai Culture

by: Jill Richardson

Fri Mar 02, 2012 at 19:38:26 PM PST

I spent the eleventh day of my trip with a Maasai family in the town of Kajiado (or just outside it perhaps) in Rift Valley Province. Because many in the U.S. are unfamiliar with pastoralism, this diary is a brief introduction to pastoralism and Maasai culture.

Day 6 was a long day. After visiting a small farm in a semi-arid region and a nearby primary school (grades 1-8), we headed off to a nearby wet region to see some farms there. This is the second post about those farms.

Kenya Diaries: Day 6, Part 2 - The School That Broke My Heart (SARDI)

by: Jill Richardson

Wed Feb 29, 2012 at 09:16:54 AM PST

After visiting a tiny but successful biointensive farm, Francis took me to Peter Kariuki Primary School. You could probably hear my heart breaking all the way from America when we visited the school.

Wanted: scientific integrity on GMOs

by: Marcia Ishii-Eiteman

Mon Feb 27, 2012 at 10:52:49 AM PST

Originally posted on Pesticide Action Network's blog, Groundtruth.

As reported in this week's UK Guardian, Nina Federoff spoke about threats to science at a meeting of 8,000 professional scientists. The former Bush Administration official and GMO proponent described her "profound depression" at how difficult it is to "get a realistic conversation started on issues such as climate change or genetically modified organisms." I too have agonized over our inability to talk seriously about climate change.

However - and this is no small matter - by conflating fringe climate-deniers with established scientists raising valid concerns about the effects of GMOs, Federoff undermines the scientific integrity that she purports to uphold. The hypocrisy is astonishing.

Kenya Diaries: Day 6, Part 1 - A Small, Biointensive Farm (SARDI)

by: Jill Richardson

Sun Feb 26, 2012 at 04:22:13 AM PST

Day Six was a second day in the SARDI School of Painful Reality for me. We visited several farmers, most of whom seemed to be doing OK, but we also visited a primary school that just broke my heart. This diary covers our first stop at a small farm near the SARDI (Sustainable Ag & Rural Development Initiative) headquarters.
