This diary is two months overdue, but I hope you enjoy the pics of my trip to a New York Greenmarket in late October. After two years living in southern California, I quite enjoyed seeing all of the seasonal fall foods grown in the rest of the country. It made me miss living in Wisconsin!

Jill Richardson :: New York's Greenmarket

I bought some yarn here... it was going to be a gift for my cousin until I caught my cats chewing it up. Instead, I am knitting a cover for my phone cord with it, to keep the cats from chewing the phone cord up.

German butterball potatoes! These tasty amazing in blended, creamy soups.

Mushrooms

Mushroom close up

Baby turnips

Parsnips and yellow carrots

Purple carrots

Onions

Celery root - delicious! Try mixing this into blended soups or mashed potatoes. And they keep in the fridge for ages.

Kohlrabi - delicious in soups and stir fries or raw.

Yarn from merino sheep. I bought some green yarn here to include in a blanket I'm making.

Brussel sprouts - my favorite fall food!

Thanks to Eddie C (4.00 / 4)
for being my farmers' market buddy in New York when I visited.

Awesome pics, thanks! (4.00 / 3)
I missed the Union Square market by a day or so either way I think (hmmm, I could probably look it up...) when I was just back that way - visited on a Saturday and a Thursday, met up with Eddie C both times myself...

I did, however, take a picture of a Greenmarket-less Union Square Greenmarket spot!

Not as exciting, probably...

;-P

The Holiday Market was up on that Thursday, though...but I didn't get any pics...

Excuse me now, while I head back upthread to ogle the mushrooms and parsnips...

:)

I thought I'd let you kn ow that German butterballs are for sale here (4.00 / 3)
for 2.34 (euros) for 5 pounds. They are delicious just roasted with a sprinkling of fresh thyme, a little olive oil and a mixture of sea-salt & crushed black pepper. Great pics.

The most perfect food of them all... :) (4.00 / 3)
I can't think of anything potatoes won't work well in.  Stumbled across a potato bread recipe earlier today, I think I may try it this week...

Have a couple plain ole' Oregon Russets on the counter right now that I'll probably roast late tonight or tomorrow.

Can't wait 'til next Fall, when the crates upon crates of dozens of heirloom potatoes make their way back to the farmers markets here.  I think it may take me at least another 5 or 6 years to try all of them!

I guess that's what you get for living in Ireland (4.00 / 2)
ground zero for potatoes... all of the potato varieties one could ever dream of.

Yes, and yet it is strange that this country was inflicted with (4.00 / 2)
the great potato famine. I'm still grappling with a large diary on the history of this shameful episode.
