The Organic Consumers Association doesn't hold back in this piece: Six Reasons Why Obama Appointing Monsanto's Buddy, Former Iowa Governor Vilsack, for USDA Head is a Terrible Idea.

Click through to read the whole case against Vilsack. Among other things, they don't like his advocacy of genetically-engineered crops for food or pharmaceuticals, his tendency to travel in Monsanto's jet, and his support of biofuels.

I can't recall anything Vilsack did as governor to address pollution from conventional farming or to promote sustainable agriculture.

I would much rather see Vilsack in a different post, such as secretary of education. He is very smart, understands policy and works hard, so he would be an asset to the cabinet--just not as agriculture secretary, in my opinion.

THANK FREAKING GOODNESS!!! (4.00 / 3)
Oh YES, there is a GOOD reason why I choose to associate myself with Organic Consumers Association. I was considering diarying something like this myself. I am SO glad they weighed in. Mr. Vilsack lives in the pants of the biotech industry.

I can see him preferring to go for something like Education. I wouldn't mind it if he ended up there. Anything but ag, thank you.

That's a very interesting way to put it... (4.00 / 2)

Agreed, and LOL...

a friend of mine was just talking about this (0.00 / 0)
on Tuesday. I lived out of state for most of Vilsack's first term so didn't realize how hard he was working to promote GM and biotech to other governors.

Crushed nuts anyone? (0.00 / 0)
Vil(e)sack in Obama's cabinet? I doubt this very much.

Sec of Ag (4.00 / 3)
Good for the Organic Consumers Association! I have not cared for most of the names that I have seen floated around. They all seem to be about Big Ag, genetically-engineered crops, and other objectionable policies.

I'm hoping for Jim Hightower, but I fear that Obama will be influenced by Conrad & Harkins and support more of the same.
