Time to try kabocha squash. (4.00 / 2)

That may be the last of the regularly-available winter squash varieties I have yet to try.  Plain ole' butternut is still my favorite, for the most part.  After I try a kabocha for the first time, then it's back off into the rarer ones.

There was one I had back in Oregon, and I forgot its name!  But it was great.  Got it from the People's Coop Farmers' Market, it was a blue-ish green variety...

Ah ha!  It was a Sweet Meat, that's right.  I wonder if those grow here, or what the local equivalent of that is for Southeast Pennsylvania?  Haven't seen any of those around here this year.

It's said to have a sweet, chestnut-like flavor, apparently.  Sounds interesting.  I'm sure I've probably had it in a curry or a stir fry or something once, but I can't recall for sure and I know I've never cooked one myself.  Now I just have to find one!  ;)

I'm sure Fair Food has them, or one of the coops.  I think the winter farmers' markets are all off this week, but otherwise I have them to try in a couple weeks as well.

...area in the world.  Washington Crossing and that area of the Delaware, specifically New Hope and Lambertville and Frenchtown.  I need to get out there for one of those reenactments, one of these years.  I noticed the water was definitely way high, even back on Sunday when I crossed the Trenton rail bridge on the way up to my mother's for the day.

While originally considered a rarified taste, a growing popular demand for Art Nouveau designs led to poor-quality mass production, hastening the demise of this original style in the early years of the twentieth century.

Copycats!  Heh.  I suppose that happens in every field though, like when unskilled stiffs took excellent buildings like this, and then turned them into half a million cheap copies across the country ranging from boring to atrocious over the next eighty years...

It's been a long time since I read the book but I sort of recall Tom Wolfe accusing the American copycats, more of a social criticism than an eye for architecture, as never understanding the roots of the International Style.

Personally I love the evolution of tall glass houses but the I'm not one to throw stones. And you know how I feel about glass houses...  

Horticulture sort of tough in stone fortresses.

I came across this Mac and Cheese recipe (4.00 / 2)

Cheesy. You want Cheesy? You want motherfucking cheesy? You need a roux.

Not just any old roux. You need a roux that you will want to drink straight out of the pan. You need a roux that will make love to your cheese. You need a roux that you will want to spread across your lovers body, and your lovers name is macaroni.

You need this roux:

Get some all purpose flour. 3 Tablesppons. Get some cornstarch. 1 Tablespoon. Get a pinch of kosher salt. Get a pinch of pepper. Get half a stick of butter (not salted)

Throw all that shit that in a pan. Heat it. Work it. Love it. Cook it for 4 minutes. Now you have a roux.

Get some 1/2 and 1/2. Dump a cup of it in.

Get some cheese. 12oz of extra sharp cheddar. Shred that shit. Add half to the sauce.

Stir. Cook for 2 min, but don't let it boil, as the cheese and milk will curdle, and the sauce will get too thick. If it gets close to boiling, take it off the heat. If it gets too thick, add some extra half/half to thin it out. When the cheese is melted and its nice and creamy, you're good.

Now put cooked noodles in a bowl. Didn't cook any? What the hell are you doing? Go cook some. Hell, cook some 10 minuites ago.

Put the remaining 6oz of cheese on the noodles. Straight on. Mix it up. Add the sauce. Mix it up.

Eat that shit. It will be the creamiest, cheesiest best god-damn mac you will ever have.

Not cheesy enough? Add 4 oz of Gruerere cheese. Not cheesy enough? Add 4 oz of Velveeta.

Not cheesy enough? Make an extra batch.

There. Done.

Laughed my ass off at that one.

...Rutgers ends their season losing three in a row, and four of their last six.  A boring and predictable overtime bowl loss due to a laughably inept offense.

A rather fitting end to a sneaky bad season in which Rutgers didn't actually beat anybody worth talking about, struggled to barely beat bad teams like Arkansas and Tulane, choked away their four hundredth chance to finally win their first conference title, and once again relied way too heavily on a good defense which naturally tires late in games what with the feeble offense being lucky just to get two first downs on any given drive.

Nova can't win games without a lot of help (which he doesn't have), and the last above average QB they had (Tom Savage) was driven out a few years ago when they went to Kirk Ciarocca and that stupid Wildcat offense for a couple seasons.  That hire set the program back at least five years, or to be more precise doomed them to continued 8 or 9-win seasons for that long.

Oh, well.  At least they have one more season, and two more recruiting classes, in the minor leagues of the Big East to get ready for the move into a real conference.

A story I've been following, mainly for the fantastically comic phrase "the tri-state's elite nightlife crowd", coined by the apparently totally self-unaware promoter of the event.  But also because it isn't far from me (not that I'd mind the event, although I certainly wouldn't have gone - it's not my 'scene').  Even The Onion couldn't have come up with a better story.

The "Drop the Ball NYE Event" at 2424 Studios' Skybox in Fishtown was supposed to include five hours of open bar, "2,000+ of the tri-state's elite nightlife crowd," a champagne toast, live ball dropping - and, neighbors feared, a drunken mess of non-locals cramming into a space that they argue could barely accommodate 1,000 party-goers. Fishtowners were none too pleased with the plan by a promoter called One Up Events. In fact, after a slew of emails to City Paper, which was among the sponsors of the event, to district Councilman Mark Squilla and to the 26th Police District, they got the event canceled, according to 2424 Studios co-owner Leonidas Addimando.

Basically, a bunch of out-of-towners heard that "Fishtown" is a totally awesome hipster neighborhood in Philadelphia filled with, like, a million totally trendy Portlandia parodies, or something like that.  So what better place to bring in thousands of douchebags from Cherry Hill, New Jersey and other surrounding suburbs and throw a bro-tastic, super-chillin' holiday spectacular in a former factory-turned-work live space!

The problems are many, however.  Beginning with the fact that despite a couple galleries on Girard, a few eateries and tattoo shops on Frankford Ave, and its ensuing reputation amongst certain quarters, Fishtown is still very much a densely-populated working class Irish Catholic neighborhood full of people who can trace their ancestry in the neighborhood back to the 1800s.  And as anyone who's spent more than a few hours in the neighborhood quickly learns, if there's one thing they hate more than anything, it's people who park in 'their' spaces (which, to be fair, considering that the neighborhood was mostly built up well over 100 years ago, and considering fire hydrants, there isn't even room on each block to park one car per rowhouse).

And in fact, this location isn't Fishtown, either.  Fishtown is south of Norris.  2424 is on York, and therefore is in Kensington.  And my Kensington is a whole 'nother story altogether.  :)

So again, anyone even half-aware could have seen the problems here from miles (or weeks) away.  Surprise, turns out it was finally canceled and moved elsewhere.

So at least, I guess, "the tri-state's elite nightlife crowd" (heh) can rest easy that they have a more appropriate spot now.  Although I'm sure a number of River Wards tow trucks and auto shops are sighing at the missed opportunity that would have ensued due to hundreds of slashed tires and smashed windshields...

Arizona beat Nevada 49-48, ASU beat Navy by about 900 - 2.

Washington and OSU lost close ones late, and UCLA was blown out by Baylor.  USC should beat Georgia Tech on Monday in the Sun Bowl (heh), Stanford will beat Wisconsin in the Rose.  If Oregon wins, the Pac should actually go 5-3.  Not bad, but Washington and OSU should have won, as well.

I'm pulling for NC State on Monday, because I want to see the SEC go 0-for this year.  Even if that means I have to root for Notre Dame next week, too.  And also Clemson, Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan, Louisville, Oklahoma and Pittsburgh.  Actually, there's a good possibility they could go 3-6 or so in bowls this year.  Which would be unspeakably awesome, of course.  With the possible exception of LSU - Clemson and maybe Michigan - South Carolina, I don't think the SEC should be clearly favored in any of their games.

There will be 330-something in the City of Philadelphia once this year's 'numbers' are finalized, up a bit from last year's 324.

The 'good news' is that the number of shooting victims are down, the bad news is that the scumbags who are doing the shooting have apparently been aiming (or hitting innocent bystanders) at a little bit of a higher clip.

Baltimore is still, per-capita, the more violent big city in our region, though this provides little comfort to the people here in our city, and particularly right here in the inner city neighborhoods of North Philadelphia, who are terrorized by violent crime every single day.

One day we can stop this, though fuck if I know how to go about doing so...

I actually threw my Ducks hat away just before I moved.  No offense, but Oregon wasn't kind to me, and those five years were, by far, the worst of my life.

But I made some very bad choices, and that's totally on me.  Not on Oregon.  My bad, I accept responsibility for that.

We were not compatible, let's just say.  I'm back home now, and it'll all be alright!

I've never been happier than I am right now.  Just waking up in Philadelphia every morning is the most wonderful thing imaginable.  And to also live in Newark part-time again soon?  Cloud 9.  I am on it.  :)

...many years ago, was supposed to meet me at a certain train station in New Jersey, to hang out for a little while and say goodbye before the Amtrak whisked me away to DC, and then on to points West, to begin what I then assumed would be the rest of my life.

Well, he actually ended up over-sleeping that day and never made it to the train, but that was okay, as I was lost in my own thoughts anyway...

Anyway.

I'll be meeting him on Tuesday at that very station, for the first time in years, and this time I live here again.  Weird, and good.

I guess you never really know where life will ultimately take you, eh?

I guess they decided that playing in even half a real conference is too much of a challenge for them.  ;)

Clearly, having to play at least three real football teams a year was much more than they were willing and able to deal with.  After all, it's so much easier to just beat ten junior varsity-level schools every year and have half a dozen ESPN nitwits continue to talk up how awesome you are and how totally unfair it is that a school which plays a Division II-caliber schedule every single season isn't taken seriously.

San Diego State is now probably backing out of joining the Big East, too.  My homeys at Temple need to get out of that conference, now now now!

With Boise State remaining in the Mountain West, the [San Diego State] Aztecs' Big East contract allows them to withdraw from the Big East without paying an exit fee if there is no other Big East member located west of the Rocky Mountains.

A Mountain West conference source with knowledge of the situation said San Diego State wants back in the Mountain West, but the league is holding up the process as it decides whether there is a better fit than the Aztecs and if there is a school that can deliver more value.

The source said if SDSU returns to the Mountain West, the Aztecs would have to come back on the conference's terms.

San Diego State was the first school to make the Big East-Big West move in trying to get the rest of its sports in the California and Hawaii-based conference. SDSU helped get Boise State into the Big West, too, once the Broncos made the football move to the Big East.

Ah, so Donkey State is also a bunch of back-stabbing snakes.  Surprise, surprise.  Let this be a lesson to everyone else they're associated with.  I do hope they eventually burn enough bridges that, in the new college football hierarchy, they are eventually forced to essentially become the Division I-AA school that they are, once again.

sanctions the NCAA levies against the Ducks. He should not pull a Pete Carroll and run to the NFL when things get a little hot at the college.

I know Chip wants to coach in the NFL, but Oregon is facing these sanctions because of things that Chip did. Chip, not boosters or errant team members or parents. This is all on Chip. He needs to deal with it.

My original plan was to have a beer at the dive bar down the block tonight; but I have to be somewhere early in the morning tomorrow, and then after that I have to head up to NJ, so instead I'm just staying home tonight.  Probably going to sleep in an hour or so.  I've seen years change before, and hopefully I'll see a few others in the future, so I can skip this one.

Anyway.

I see the "Rockin' New Year" stuff (Dick Clark, and American Bandstand, were Philadelphia products, thankyouverymuch!), and tonight's names are apparently Carson Daly and Carmen Electra.

My first thought was "whoa, those two are still relevant somewhere?  What is it, 1996 again?"

And then I looked up their birthdays out of curiosity.  Ouch, they're both only a few years older than me.  Now I feel ancient.  :)

The problem with college ball... (0.00 / 0)

...is that the final games all really come down to just 60 minutes, after each team has had four weeks off, at a neutral field where many times the better team has a significant disadvantage (Wisconsin travels well; Stanford isn't exactly known for a rabid football fan base, to say the very least) so it really is just a crapshoot quite often.  Hopefully the playoff system will fix that, but I don't think they went far enough.  There's still too much time off between the end of the regular season and the games (imagine if the NFL gave teams three or four bye weeks before the playoffs began - what's the point of that, seriously?), and no home-field advantage whatsoever.

USC got their behinds handed to them, and even though that was bad for the Pac I still found it highly amusing.  Ha ha.

Michigan somehow found a way to blow their game with 11 seconds to go.  Just for that, I hope they begin a brand new 7-game losing streak to Ohio State.  And a few times to new conference-mate Rutgers, as well.  ;)

I didn't even get to watch any of the games, as I was out and running around all day today, but I will definitely be watching the Ducks in 43 hours!

...has lost three straight Rose Bowls now.  That's kinda amazing, and also a little sad.  Amongst the current schools of that conference, I'm partial to Michigan State myself, but Wisconsin is the least objectionable of all the rest of them.  This, of course, will change in 12 months once Rutgers joins the conference, but I kinda feel bad for the Badgers.

The Big East actually has the best bowl record of all BCS conferences so far, at 3-1 with one game (Pitt - Ole Miss) to go. Coming in second is the ACC at 4-2.  Big 12 is 4-3, SEC is 3-3, Pac is 3-4, and the Big Ten is 2-5.

Damned straight!  That (blocked PAT, recovered by Kansas State and then taken back into their own end zone, where they were taken down by an Oregon defender) is absolutely a 1-point safety.  How did the officials not know that on the first call?

I should be a college football referee!
