If anyone is interested... (4.00 / 1)
these were the photos I uploaded to Flickr this week:

Greeting the Winter Sun

The High Line in the Rain

Ladder & Wall

Blue Ice at Sundown

Serendipity

Have you ever heard of Abu Talib?

Even in the Quietest Moments

The Brooklyn Bridge

Fame Seeking Turtle in Central Park

They each come with a description below the photo or perhaps a few more shots to explain my madness.

Some of them are pretty good.

1493 (4.00 / 2)
I downloaded the iBook version of 1493, and I'm delighted that it has the same maps and photos as a print version.

Does anyone know if the Kindle version also has the illustrations, or is it text only?

I have that on Kindle (4.00 / 2)
It has the maps in it. Are there other illustrations as well in other versions?

Yup (4.00 / 2)
just flipped through some pages, it's got the photographs as well. It's been a while since I've read it.

I never even... (4.00 / 1)
...got much past the first chapter of 1491.  Too many distractions.  One of these years we should give that book club thing another try...

Books! (4.00 / 1)
I like them.  :)

Cannot answer your question, unfortunately, but some time this evening I am going to turn off the computer and sit down to read The Pale King straight through.  I have the time this week, and no more distractions... third time will be the charm!

I must be... (4.00 / 1)
...the most popular man in the world, if my email spam folder is any indication.  A hundred people a day are running background checks on me, apparently!

Puerto Rico, laboratory for corn, sorghum, cotton and transgenic soybeans:
The island is hosting a reality that the government hides and sponsors: the island is an important center for eight companies, seven of them multinationals, that are developing the first generation of genetically modified seeds for distribution to United States and around the world. The strongholds of these corporations extend into public and private farms, especially in the best farmland along the island's southern coast, which in the last century was under the rule of His Majesty sugarcane, exalted by large landowners that sought to take over the land.

I don't care if Monday's blue... (4.00 / 1)
Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Just sayin'!

What a great song...

:-D

And for the record... (4.00 / 1)
Philly!

:-D

Sorry, just can't help myself...

416 hours to go!

And whoo! (4.00 / 1)
I'll be back home in less than three weeks!

My little Cornish X chicks are 1 week old today (4.00 / 3)
and I think they've doubled in size. They're going outstide next weekend. They're getting pretty loud right now and they've almost outgrown the brooding box they worked so well in last Turesday.....

There's a lot to be said about traditional breeding techniques as far as that whole feed conversion thing goes.

;-)

So far, I've lost only one out of 52. That's pretty good considering that they have access to feed and water 24/7. I'm using a lower protein crumble (non medicated) than what they're normally started on. That's probably why I haven't had more than the one mort.

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

you know, (4.00 / 2)
i just saw cornish x's for the first time since I've had my own chickens. It just makes me sad to see chickens that don't act like chickens. They just sit there!

It's all in how you raise them (4.00 / 2)
mine act just like any other chicken. They run and forage and do all sorts of things. Last year mine were flying up in the trees right along with the layers and they were roosting in the coop along with everyone else about 5' up.

I'm feeding these birds a lower protein ration than the chick starter. It's more of an all purpose crumble. That means they grow slower. I've had people tell me that you can't grow them on that kind of ration, but I do it every year. Sure, my birds take longer to get to market weight, but I like that the meat's firmer, the birds are healthy and active and they're very lean. I like a bird that's nice an active and when I slaughter them they're young enough that they're still nice and tender.

This flock will mostly go for Rock Cornish Game Hen size, so I'll be bringing in another batch in the next couple weeks and this group will be slaughtered probably the end of March or the middle of April depending on how fast they grow.

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

School lunch... (4.00 / 1)
Haven't read it yet, but throwing it out here.  In part, so I can also easily find it again later. ;)

From the March 2012 issue of Philadelphia magaizine...

I never... (0.00 / 0)
...made it down to the Bob's whole grain store and restaurant in Milwaukie.  Fooey!

Oh well, maybe in 35 years if I visit Portland again. ;)

You don't think you'll come back to visit? n/t (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
Hard to say... (0.00 / 0)
It would have to be specifically just to visit again, as I doubt I'll ever have business here or anything, and also... well, these past years weren't too kind to me.  Perhaps I should just never look back, is what I'm thinking for now.  No offense to the city or the people here, of course.  :)
