In case you ever wondered how worms do it, I caught two of them in the act when I opened my worm bin today. They didn't mind posing for the camera:

It's so amazing what you learn once you start gardening!

(On a totally unrelated note, I interviewed Joan Gussow about her new book Growing, Older this morning and I will post the interview as soon as I'm done transcribing it, within the next seven days.)

Doesn't look very pleasurable to me (4.00 / 2)
but then again, I'm not a worm.

I can't wait to see... (4.00 / 3)
...what kinds of spammers will be drawn to the blog tomorrow morning!

:-D

I had some worm porn going on (4.00 / 3)
at my place also :) I was moving my secondary (aka as newest) compost bin contents into the larger bin I had just bagged up and was shocked at the amount of worms I had. One shovelful looked like an orgy, lol!~ and a massive one at that. And they do it in front of the little worm babies ;)

one other thing I've learned about the garden, Starbucks coffee grounds seem to be my slug answer :) I still had some of the 15lb bag they gave me and scattered it over my new beds and NOBODY is eating my new peas. They've also stopped munching on my collards and kale! MY new spinach, bok choy etc look like they'll have a chance on the first go round . . .

on your unrelated note, looking forward to your interview. I just poured through both of her books a couple weeks ago when I was flat on my back from lifting my nephew . . .

Do you put the coffee grounds (4.00 / 1)
on the soil or till/dig 'em in? I'd love to find something like that for slugs.

I'm not drinking coffe at home right now, I'm drinking tea, but maybe I could talk the local cafes into giving me their used grounds.

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

I just spread it over the top (4.00 / 1)
I give it a pretty good covering. The Starbucks by my mom gives me a trash bag when I stop in. I had heard they give it out free by the pound, but this place gives it by the pounds :)(I only drink about a cup of coffee a day, so having a generous source is very nice!) I just spread it out after I've planted the seeds. I used it last year, but it was later in the season and I was already behind on figuring out how to control them. This year I'm being much more proactive, so I'm hoping for even better results. I've also had some other areas in the back cleared to it's less slug friendly. I have one more area I want to clear the next break in the rains. I'll put a greens garden in there, so that should help as the area is currently covered in a low growing violet ground cover type plant. I'm hoping to keep the population re-growth to a min also.

Another thing it may help with when it warms up is cucumber beetles since they come up from the ground. I was surprised by them one morning last year. oy. It's also supposed to keep the ants away, which would be great as that's another issue I have (try digging up potatoes with your hands and discovering the ants are residing under there!!)

I'm really excited as to how well my young peas are doing right now. Not a blemish or any sign anyone's tried to munch on them (they've been up for a couple weeks). HUGE improvement and I had seen young snails and slugs starting to emerge when I was out there prepping various areas before planting (and on my collards and kale). One of my collard plants is a thing of beauty now that nobody is eating it. I need to photograph it as I just love how it looks :)

Cool! (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for the info. I'm definately going to hit up the cafes and coffee shops now.
