Food safety bill "back from the dead"

You may recall that Senate Democrats imperiled the food safety bill, S510, by forgetting to put revenue-raising language in a bill that originated in the House of Representatives. Senate leaders tried to salvage the situation by adding the food safety language to the massive ominbus spending bill Congress was expected to approve last week. However, Senate Republicans torpedoed the omnibus bill on Friday, leaving few options for getting the food safety bill to President Barack Obama's desk before the new Congress convenes.

Today Jamie Dupree reported that the Senate took the food safety language from the "continuing resolution" on spending that had already passed the House and added it to "a House-passed Cash for Clunkers" bill. The Senate then approved the new bill by unanimous consent. Amazingly, no Republican gummed up the works on that, not even the food safety bill's deadly enemy Tom Coburn. The bill now goes back to the House, where Dupree says approval is expected this week.

UPDATE: The Hill's Alexander Bolton and Matthew Jaffe of ABC News report on the Senate maneuvering.

I had almost given up on this bill passing. It's not perfect, but it's a good step forward.

Nice, (4.00 / 1)
more bullshit shenagigans from our illustrious congress.

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

Good catch... (4.00 / 2)
I just sent an email to Jill, I was gonna post something but I'm a bit distracted at the moment.

Here's the article.

thanks (4.00 / 2)
Added that link and the story from The Hill. I wonder how they got Coburn on board.

My bet... (4.00 / 1)
...is he had a few dozen angry Republicans corner him in the Cloak Room and let him know they want to go home this year.

;)

Now what did he get in return is the question...

or (4.00 / 2)
some lobbyists representing corporations/industry groups that want the bill passed got to him.

Food-safety measure passes Senate in Sunday surprise

John Hart, a spokesman for Coburn, said Sunday night that he did not know why his boss relented.

I got your email (4.00 / 2)
and Bill Marler emailed me earlier, RIGHT when it passed. But I'm so tired and sore for building the coop, not to mention COLD from the weather, that I just didn't have it in me to blog about it. I put it in my Facebook status update instead.

I wrote up a quick post for Bleeding Heartland (4.00 / 3)
and figured you wouldn't mind if I cross-posted the news here.

You want cold? Come visit me sometime soon! We can go sledding...

No problem! (4.00 / 2)
I would have done it myself but I was distracted for about an hour right after I read it, figured I'd pass it along just in case.

desmoinesdem got it done.

;)

Time for a deep muscle massage with homemade chocolate and caramel. Ah, you Californians know how to live.

You didn't ask (4.00 / 3)
but I'll tell you.

I'll tell you how fucked up the Senate Dem caucus is.

How fucked up is the Senate Democratic caucus, Johnny?

The Senate Democratic caucus is so fucked up that Harry Reid and Dick Durbin will return in their same leadership roles for the next Congress.

Bah!

By the way, I heard on a Sunday talk show that Reid will be Majority Leader in the 112th Congress, but I haven't been able to confirm that after an hour of searching. Is this a done deal?

Anyway, this is good news about the food safety legislation. Thanks, dmd.

Yes, Harry Reid was recently reelected as (4.00 / 2)
Senate Majority Leader by the hapless and politically irresponsible Democratic Caucus. The Dems will still hold the majority in the Senate come January. Not that it will make much difference.

I fully expect Obama to once again surrender before the battle even starts by offering up his own "deficit reduction" measures, including cuts to Social Security and Medicare. He will think he is offering a bipartisan compromise; the GOP will laugh in his face and demand even more draconian cuts all the while screaming that Obama and the Dems are destroying Social Security.

And there will be Harry, not fighting back.

2012 map... (4.00 / 1)
This looks like 'fun'.

Get ready for a return to massive Republican majorities in both houses of Congress.  Of course, they already essentially run things now don't they?

What I see... (4.00 / 1)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but on that map I see -

Dem seats, tough holds to tossups:

Washington
Montana
New Mexico
Nebraska
North Dakota
Missouri
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Michigan
Ohio
West Virginia
Pennsylvania
New Jersey
Virginia
Florida

Republican seat, probable Dem pickup:

Massachusetts

Republican seat, Hail Mary Dem pickups:

Nevada
Maine

Wow...

Amazing, seems like Tester got to D.C. just yesterday. Matter of fact, seems like that whole Tester-Webb-McCaskill-Klobuchar-Lieberman-Sherrod Brown ruckus is a vivid recent memory.

By the way, I've paid attention to Klobuchar on the floor. She seems quick, very sharp, and gutsy. Reminds me of Barb Boxer. Minnesota's "other" Senator is one of those voices I'd like to hear more of, and she was on Face The Nation again Sunday.

Klobuchar Heavy Favorite for 2012 Senate

Minnesota Senator easily outpolls GOP competitors

08 Dec 2010, 8:53 AM CST
Leif Knutson
FOX 9 News

Amy Klobuchar is the most popular of 66 senators in 2010, and she won her first election to the Senate four years ago by 20 points during the democratic shift in voters. The polling for the 2012 United States Senate election shows Klobuchar 10 points ahead of any competitor -- including big names such as Tim Pawlenty, Tom Emmer, Michelle Bachmann.
...

Outgoing Governor Pawlenty comes closest, but Klobuchar outpolled him, 53-43.

Thanks for the link... (4.00 / 1)
Looks like one of the better of that class is doing okay, at least.  Yeah, it does seem the years on that group went fast, huh?

Menendez in New Jersey, too.  He's been better in the Senate than he was in the House, but that ain't really saying much.  If Lou Dobbs (yeah, that Lou Dobbs) makes true on his threat to run as an "independent" for Senate in 2012, Menendez wins in a walk in a three-way.  I worry about a straight-up race, though.  New Jersey is, for some odd reason, looking more like Pennsylvania and Ohio these days than New York and Connecticut.  Will it return to its pre-'96 status as an official "swing state" again?  Hope it's not because I left!  Heh.

Connecticut should be interesting.  Will Lieberman will have backing from the White House?  Does he have any support left in Connecticut himself?  Now that I think of it, should this one be thrown in tossup territory as well?  Could a Rob Simmons type sneak in and win with 38% in a three-way?  If he can beat the inevitable teabagger or other character in the R primary, of course.  Linda McMahon still has a few hundred million left, I think...
