Committee Turnover in Congress

I've gone through the turnover in several committees that impact food. In the Senate, it's mainly the Ag committee, along with the Ag Appropriations committee. In the House, the Energy & Commerce committee does things related to the FDA (like food safety), the Ag Committee does the farm bill and the USDA's food safety, and the Education & Labor committee does school lunch.

I've also gone through and made a list of which Blue Dogs stay and go. And many more are going than staying. This election - and the loss of so many Blue Dogs to Republicans - made the Democratic party better, but it made the Congress worse.

The biggest impact will be to the House Ag committee. Out of 27 Democrats that went into this election, 21 of whom were Blue Dogs, only 12 will be returning to Congress, 10 of whom are Blue Dogs.

Energy and Commerce (4.00 / 2)
Joe Barton ("I apologize to BP") currently is ranking member of House Energy and Commerce. I guess he'll take the chair?

yes (4.00 / 2)
and watch the beginning of Rachel Maddow from today about him. He's the biggest recipient of oil $$ in Congress and worked at Arco (now owned by BP) before going to Congress.

House Ag (4.00 / 2)
Frank Lucas is current ranking member of House Agriculture.

Blue Dogs (4.00 / 2)
Ag Committee Dems,

12 will be returning to Congress, 10 of whom are Blue Dogs.

Wow.

[ Parent ]
yeah. (4.00 / 2)
I'd say I wish more non-Blue Dogs on the committee survived, but it's not like most of them were great either. I wish Steve Kagen survived. He was in a tough district. His race was close in 2008... only he won that time.

Don't be dissin my rep (4.00 / 2)
Kurt Schrader may be a Blue Dog, and maybe you don't like him for that, but he's good people and I voted for him. I think he's been doing a good job in DC and I absolutely did not want Scot Bruun.

Go gore someone else's ox.

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

[ Parent ]
I don't think... (4.00 / 1)
...Jill's ever said anything bad about Kurt.  I see him as a decent guy, too.  And apparently, nobody wants Scott Bruun.  He's now run in the 3rd (1996 against Earl) and the 5th.  I guess he can always move to Hillsboro and run in the 1st in a few years.  Then down to Eugene to run against DeFazio before he retires...

;)

Btw, Kurt moved up big on the House Ag Committee after Tuesday.  Like 5 spots, and maybe one more pending Jim Costa's race in CA.  At only 59, might he become House Ag Sec one day?

Chairman, of course... (4.00 / 1)
House Ag Chairman.

My brain isn't working well this morning, apparently...

[ Parent ]
She identified him as a blue dog (4.00 / 1)
which, according to Jill in the diary is a bad thing. Maybe not quite so bad as a republican, but I get the impression that it's not too much of a step up.

Jill, do you believe that a blue dog could be good?

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

[ Parent ]
The Blue Dogs proudly self-identify as such. nt (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
Favors fiscal conservatism, national security and bipartisanship (0.00 / 0)
over ideology and party discipline. Sounds like some good reasons to identify oneself as such.

But my contention was not with the blue dogs, it was with Jill saying that as a blue dog, my representavie, Kurt Schrader, is a bad person to have in congress.

You know how when the democrats are in the majority they're always whining about the republicans blocking things? And how, when the republicans are in the majority they're always whining about how the democrats are being obstructionists?

That's because of party discipline. Each party is trying to keep the other one from doing any good and therefore gaining points with their constituents. The republican leadership would like for people to vote only for republicans, and the democratic leadership would like for people to vote only for democrats. That's bullshit.

Unless we want to go with a one party system, we're going to have to learn to work and communicate better with each other and with the other parties as they are formed.

The type of contention going on between the democrats and republicans all over this country is what is dragging us down. They're like little bickering children. I swear to God sometimes I want to send each to it's corner for a time out.

Blue dogs are a good thing. So are moderate republicans, what ever they call themselves. I know the far to the right republicans call them RINOs (republican in name only).

Normal people scare me.... But not as much as I scare them.

House Education and Labor (4.00 / 2)
John Kline is current ranking member of House Education and Labor. I have watched some Education and Labor hearings. Just based on that, his taking the chair could be really bad news, but does anyone know anything about this guy?

Off-hand I don't (4.00 / 2)
Can't remember Kline off the top of my head but search this site for my write-ups of the hearings. Should have something on any statements he's made at school lunch hearings.

Marchant is not on Ed & Labor (4.00 / 2)

Why not? (4.00 / 1)
I mean, was he on it formerly, but left for some reason? His bio lists only one committee, Financial Services, which seems very strange.

Ed & Labor membership lists one Republican vacancy.
