I lost five pounds today! (4.00 / 1)
"How'd you do that, Jay?"

I walked across the street, paid Barber Dan a visit.

:)

Whoo, I was going on seven weeks of neanderthal wildness there until this afternoon!

Website... (4.00 / 1)
Barber Dan has a website, btw, which is one of the most awesomest websites ever.

"True Barber Style" has got to be one of the 15 Greatest Phrases in history, no?

Especially considering the current unfortunate state of barbering in America.  Chain salons can kiss my ass!

No Appointments - Walk In Only

As Marv Albert would say, Yesssshhhh!!!

The building (shared with the coffee shop), fwiw, dates back to 1927, the streetcar era, when the Woodstock Streetcar ran down Gladstone on its way between Clinton and Woodstock.

And that building at right-center... (4.00 / 1)
...is the one where the previous tenant just moved out, and where the new one is already fixing up and moving in (unknown to me at the moment).

Also where I briefly entertained fantasies of opening a butcher shop / produce market / cafe, and returning the building to its original use!

Used to be the neighborhood market here in Creston-Kenilworth, built in 1928 as a streetcar-line retail building.  Long-time residents of C-K still refer to it as the greenmarket.  Some signs of its past still remain -

I'm going to have to start (4.00 / 1)
going out and taking photographs of abandoned oil containment devices, just to keep up with you.

There is an area very near here that has a lot of good decaying lettering. I thought about that last time I went by there.

Ghost signs! (4.00 / 1)
We call 'em "ghost signs", and I'd love to see those from the areas of others!

10,000 Registered Users... (4.00 / 2)
We hit 10,000 registered users on La Vida Locavore today.

Although unfortunately, it looks like user id 10,000 may be a spambot.

Still, a milestone to be recognized!

Speaking of Egg Recalls (4.00 / 2)
U.S. Rejected Hen Vaccine Despite Success in Britain

NYT

Faced with a crisis more than a decade ago in which thousands of people were sickened from salmonella  in infected eggs, farmers in Britain began vaccinating their hens against the bacteria. That simple but decisive step virtually wiped out the health threat.

But when American regulators created new egg safety rules that went into effect last month, they declared that there was not enough evidence to conclude that vaccinating hens against salmonella would prevent people from getting sick. The Food and Drug Administration decided not to mandate vaccination of hens - a precaution that would cost less than a penny per a dozen eggs.

Now, consumers have been shaken by one of the largest egg recalls ever, involving nearly 550 million eggs from two Iowa producers, after a nationwide outbreak of thousands of cases of salmonella was traced to eggs contaminated with the bacteria.
