Sunday... (4.00 / 1)
Sundays get me depressed these days.  They only serve to remind me I have no job to go to tomorrow...

:/

Anybody hiring?  I'll move anywhere as long as it's in Portland.

;)

Okay, kidding.  Kinda.  Oakland or Seattle would work!

Hawaiian food... (4.00 / 1)
There's some buzz amongst the local foodista about a new restaurant opening in Portland.  A Hawaiian place (we have a bunch of mediocre ones already, but this one is apparently by a respected chef), and a featured dish is Loco Moco.

Haven't heard of it before, but it's apparently a cult favorite.

Anybody familiar with it, or Hawaiian Cuisine in general?

What chef? (4.00 / 2)
I don't recall PDX ever having a good Hawaiian restaurant. It could be interesting.

Do you know who the rumored chef is?

...of Simpatica and Laurelhurst Market.  He grew up in Hawaii, so it looks like he knows what he's doing. ;)

The restaurant is Ate-Oh-Ate (808 is Hawaii's area code), opening September 11 on E. Burnside near 28th.

Here's the latest piece on it...

Still have to hit LM, btw... (4.00 / 1)
Or at least check out their butcher shop one of these days.

Have you ever eaten at Laurelhurst Market?

I have not, but (4.00 / 2)
the reviews from friends are glowing. Not only is the meat fantastic, but LM takes incredible with the preparation of its side dishes. The vegetables cooked to perfection, etc.

It's on my list for someday, when I have a little extra $$.

Thanks  for the info on the Hawaiian restaurant. I'll keep my eye out.

Shirley Sherrod (4.00 / 1)
Sherrod set to discuss return to USDA

AP

WASHINGTON - The USDA employee who was pushed out of her job during a racial firestorm last month is set to meet with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to discuss coming back to work at the agency.

Shirley Sherrod has appeared reluctant to accept Vilsack's offer of a new job and has kept quiet about her plans. They are to meet Tuesday.

BP hearings (4.00 / 1)
The Deepwater Horizon Joint Investigation hearings resumed yesterday. There will be a lot less lawyerly b.s. from now on, because a retired U.S. District Judge has been appointed to chair the hearings, and he knows what he's doing.

Deepwater Horizon Joint Investigation for witness lists and such. Vidrine and Kolusa still are refusing to appear. At least one of them is taking the Fifth. The Judge discussed this yesterday, but the C-SPAN yackety-yacker talked over him and I couldn't make out the name.

This round of hearings is frontpaged at C-SPAN, which has the video from yesterday. Looks like all this week's hearings will be on C-SPAN2.

Fifth Amendment (4.00 / 1)
The claim of Fifth Amendment protection is exercised by Brian Morel. This is a big surprise to me. Morel was the junior drilling engineer on the Macondo well, and although he participated in very questionable decision making, I wasn't aware that he made final decisions on anything. Perhaps I was wrong.

The Mets... (4.00 / 1)
...can still win 100 games this year!

If they 38-0 the rest of the season.

(grumbling under breath...)

Can't believe I let them pull me back in six weeks or so ago.  They're actually more likely to go 0-38 the rest of the way.  I'll call their final record 79-83.

$136 million payroll.  In the end, it'll add up to about $1.7 million per win.  The Yankees pay over $2 million a win, but they spend $206 million and win 98 or 100 or so games every year.

Yeah, baseball's getting past ridiculous these days.  I go weeks without even seeing $200, let alone $200 million...

visiting a farm (4.00 / 1)
Save it for the Combine

Posted by Jason Bradford on August 24, 2010

I have been visiting A2R Farms outside of Corvallis Oregon all year.  They are a former conventional grass seed farm transitioning to organic seed crops, primarily for local distribution.  I watched as they planted the fields and as the crops grew--flax, chick peas, sunflowers and wheat.  And as harvest season approached I looked over at the combines and asked my friend Clinton Lindsey, "Which one am I driving?"

So I was delighted to get a call the other morning.  Over the hum of a motor Clint told me, "Hey Jason, I'm harvesting the field north of our office today if you want to visit."  Heck yeah!  And I could bring the whole family.  It was Saturday and we all would get a turn in the cab.
...

I propose that the main enabler of a demographic shift away from rural-agrarian populations to an urban-industrial one is the combine.  The combine removes most labor from agriculture for the most critical crops:  edible grains, legumes and oil seeds.  Seeds are a highly portable, storable and versatile class of food, allowing civilizations to trade and buffer against shortages.  Most calories now consumed derive directly or indirectly from seeds.

Substantial essay, good information, interesting perspective.

HR 510 (4.00 / 1)
I don't know if this is true.

from eric blair

HR 510 and the passed regs on animal tracking want you to either tag all your chickens with RFID or laser eye scan them with a $30,000 machine.

HR 510 has claims that if you grow any vegs that are sold - $500 a year fee to be entered into the database.
