The Obama Admin Thinks I'm on Drugs

From The Hill:

The White House is simmering with anger at criticism from liberals who say President Obama is more concerned with deal-making than ideological purity.

During an interview with The Hill in his West Wing office, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs blasted liberal naysayers, whom he said would never regard anything the president did as good enough.

"I hear these people saying he's like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested," Gibbs said. "I mean, it's crazy."

Wow. Talk about Not Getting It. I'm not for ideological purity - I'm for making good decisions and fixing problems. Which, in many cases, the Obama administration is not doing. He's not as bad as George Bush but he's also not the president of "Change" and "Hope." I think whoever said that Obama is for a kinder, gentler military hegemony had it right. He's continuing an awful lot of Bush-era badness, much of which preceded even Bush, but he manages to put a better face on it. That's all.

Yesterday, I got a survey about Obama's performance in the mail from the DNC. They wanted me to rank my priorities among all of the various issues. On the list were "Dealing with Iran" and "Dealing with North Korea," both of which are more or less non-issues in my world. Not included in this list was ANY mention of the environment, clean energy, offshore oil drilling, or global warming, or anything related to the health of the American people, including our continued lack of a sufficient health care system despite the passage of the health care reform bill. In the space for comments, I wrote "Are you Democrats or Republicans?"

Do I still need a drug test?

Looking "tough"... (4.00 / 3)
99% of all problems with the Democratic Party today is that they're basically afraid of being called pansies by the Republicans.  So they "play tough", and make it clear that they're also willing to punch Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-il in the mouth, just like the "Daddy" Party is!

The Dems play right into it rather than ignoring such accusations, like any sane adult would and should.  Being a Democratic "strategist" must be a wonderful job.  I'm pretty sure I use more brain cells folding and taping cardboard boxes at shoe warehouses on temp jobs for a few hours than they do over entire campaign seasons.

But then again... (4.00 / 2)
...maybe I'm being too generous.  Another significant problem with the D's these days is that too many are simply R's in disguise.

well, the moderate R's that got purged (4.00 / 2)
from their own party had to go somewhere...

Now if only... (4.00 / 2)
...we DFH's the D's want to purge had a party to go to, huh?

;)

[ Parent ]
Seriously. (4.00 / 3)
I don't suppose Bernie Sanders is accepting new members to his party, do you?

I've got to agree with that... (4.00 / 3)
Republicans are just plain evil. But the Democrats (the ones who are not also evil) are cowards, who constantly roll over for the GOP. They are also not very bright at selling their ideas.  My real problem with Obama is that he continues to play "nice" with the GOP instead of treating them as the contemptible enemy. He doesn't push back, he goes the extra mile with them, and then a whole bunch more.  Seems to me it would be really easy to fight back and blame the apparent lack of progress on the GOP. That should be the constant steady message from the Democrats.

On the other hand, I agree that the Obama administration has done a great many good things, even if not to the extent that we would like. He is infinitely preferable to having any Republican in the White House.

Obama's done some good (4.00 / 1)
but he's also done some bad. And I think that the bad, largely, outweighs the good.

Careful, Jill! (4.00 / 1)
We sure wouldn't want to upset The Wall Street Boyz, and make them call us names again!

And btw, if I'm part of the 'professional left', then where's my damned check?

Also, I certainly wouldn't mind a toke myself these days.  Besides, what's worse in the end - issuing orders to assassinate American citizens (even Dubya didn't go there!) or smoking a little weed?

[ Parent ]
check? (4.00 / 2)
You're not satisfied with the T-shirt? Or the fig leaf, as the case may be?

[ Parent ]
preferable to a Republican (4.00 / 2)
Yes, but Obama was not elected to be a placeholding chairwarmer.

[ Parent ]
looking tough (4.00 / 2)
Fearing to fail to look tough is not Obama's problem. He caves fearlessly.

[ Parent ]
Lol... (4.00 / 2)
Yes, good point!  He's got massive huevos when it comes to surrendering!

[ Parent ]
Idealogical purity? (4.00 / 3)
So far, I haven't seen ANY idealogy from Obama. It seems he believes in nothing and will not defend any position. It seems he sees conservatism as just another political philosophy, as progressivism as just another way of belief, just like any other. I have no idea what he really believes in and the result is a continuation of the failed neoliberal course our country was set upon by the Reaganites.

They're "pragmatists"... (4.00 / 2)
Which in their world means "doing whatever we can to not piss off the Republicans and Joe Lieberman too much, and make them call us bad names".

So liberals had better STFU and get with the program, or else we'll have a Republican back in charge!  Not that they aren't already in all but name, but hey...

[ Parent ]
Pragmatists? They're politicians (4.00 / 2)
is what they are. Too bad you can't get into the White House without being a politician.

Whiners, the whole lot of 'em. (4.00 / 4)
I have known 3 year olds who don't whine as much as the people currently occupying the West Wing. Maybe Obama and the gang are having a hard time adjusting to a world where Obama's every move is not greeted with adulation, his every word is not proclaimed an oratorical masterpiece, and if anybody is still fainting at his public appearances it's probably because their food stamps got cut and they're hungry.

[ Parent ]
And let me just add (4.00 / 4)
that I cannot remember an administration that complained this loudly and publicly about how mean everyone is to them.  Not even that self-pitying sniveler extraordinaire Richard Nixon was this publicly pitiful.

How are they not embarrassed by this?

[ Parent ]
Nailed it! (4.00 / 2)
Greatest. Comment. Ever.

Survey (4.00 / 3)
These days I usually just toss mail from the DNC directly into the recycle bin. Thanks for alerting me that this one was a survey. I made sure to dig it out of the bin to explain that this "professional leftie" and others like me were more than slightly responsible for giving them those electoral gains in 06 and 08.

And no climate change on the list? Really? I guess Russians burning, Pakistanis drowning, and gigantic ice islands breaking off Greenland are not really all that important. What a truly sad disconnect.

PS. I do realize that these recent unprecedented weather events aren't proof of global warming, but they sure are examples of what will soon be considered the norm.

I opened it bc I just registered to vote (since I had moved) (4.00 / 3)
and I thought it had to do with completing the registration. And honestly, I am all too glad to tell the DNC what I am thinking and what my priorities are. They NEED to know that stuff since obviously they haven't a clue.

They gave up on climate change (4.00 / 3)
because they don't have 60 votes in the 'Senate'?

[ Parent ]
oh they've messed around with bills a few times (0.00 / 0)
and I think passed one in the House. But it wasn't even on the priorities list in the survey!

I think that (4.00 / 3)
getting interested in who says they think I'm on drugs, is buying in to their framing.

Thus, I ignore.
