In May 2010, I visited Cuba for 10 days to research agroecological farming. Cuba, surprisingly enough, is a beacon of sustainable agriculture. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba experienced a crisis because it lost access to many imports it formerly relied upon: oil, agrochemicals, and food. As a survival strategy, Cubans turned to agroecology and urban agriculture. For a summary of what I learned in Cuba, I recommend my piece on Alternet, "Life After Oil: Cuba Can Teach Us How to Live Without Our Dirty Fossil Fuel Addiction."

Below, find links to my daily diaries of my trip. (My favorite posts are Day 4, Part 1 and Day 9, Part 1.)
