Food Safety: ACTION NEEDED NOW!

The food safety bill is expected to hit the Senate floor NEXT WEEK. The House bill and the current Senate version of the bill are pretty good on closing some important loopholes to ensure food safety BUT they are still detrimental to small, sustainable farms. Fortunately, Sen. Jon Tester is an organic farmer himself, so he really gets it. He's proposed an amendment that would put in place some much needed fixes to the bill.

We've got only a few days left to convince each Senator to support the Tester amendment. Given that, CREDO has set up a fax action alert (which is quite possibly the best way to reach your Senator quickly & effectively). Even if you've already called or emailed, please use CREDO's action alert to send a fax. Then email the fax link to your friends and family. Tweet it on Twitter! Post it on Facebook!

Take action here.

This is a joke, right? (0.00 / 0)
I've spent the last hour trying to find out something, anything about this so-called amendment. Does it exist? Nothing on Senator Tester's website - no press realease, no media link. Nothing in Thomas. The S. 510 page in Thomas shows no amendments - none, zero, zilch, zip, nada.

I did find these:

New laws could hurt Western North Carolina food producers

Hamil, who said the new regulations would kill a blueberry distribution business he has started, said he supports an amendment by Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., that would exempt small producers.

JOE ORSO: Food safety bill could hamper small farms

By Joe Orso For the La Crosse Tribune | Posted: Sunday, April 11, 2010

Cornucopia, which seeks economic justice for the family-scale farming community, is urging people to ask senators to support an amendment from U.S. Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) that would exempt small-scale farmers and food processors from some of the bill's regulations.

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold looks forward to reviewing Tester's amendment once it is released, he wrote in an e-mailed statement.

Cornucopia endorses an amendment that hasn't been seen even by Senator Feingold? Get serious.

I did the credo fax (4.00 / 1)
But changed the text and made it much shorter and to the point.
