I've been working on the Cook for Good project for nearly three years, helping people eat healthy, seasonal food for very little money. Starting Saturday, I'm taking the show on the road as the Cook for Good Coast-to-Coast Tour, from Wilmington North Carolina to Portland Oregon for the International Association of Culinary Professionals conference. Then back east to Gainesville Florida and north home to North Carolina. The main goal of the tour is helping people see how easy and affordable it is to cook real, seasonal food from scratch. The main goal of Cook for Good is to help people save money, eat well, and make a difference, including slowing global warming by making more environmentally sound food choices.

The tour will raise money for the Community Food Security Coalition and other local anti-hunger or environmental groups.

Want a tour stop in your town? Read below for details.

I'll be teaching at co-ops, stores, and for various organizations such as Volunteers in Medicine as I go to Portland and back. If you'd like to have me do one or more classes for your organization or have an active MeetUp group or other gathering of like-minded souls, let me know! I'm happy to consider local groups as the beneficiary for a particular tour event.

Classes on the tour are:

You bought it, so cook it! Making green cooking affordable - You can afford to cook with local, sustainably grown, and organic ingredients. Just squeeze every last drop of flavor and nutrition out of the food you buy. I'll show you how to make delicious dishes out of food that many people throw away. Learn how to make Magic Asparagus Quiche, Parsley Pesto, Chickpea Gravy, and Spanish Rice. Develop new habits that will provide you with "free" meals every month. Save hundreds of dollars a year and up your locavore score by making the best use of your freezer. If you don't learn enough tips to save at least double the cost of this class in a year, contact Cook for Good for a full refund. Class time: 1 hour.

Cook for Good in 20 Minutes a Day - In just 20 minutes of active time a day, you can cook a big part of your family's food for the week from pure, seasonal ingredients. You'll marvel at how easy it is to save money by cooking delicious food from scratch. I'll show you my super-efficient cooking plan that lets even a busy family enjoy home-made bread, pasta sauces, bean stews, healthy snacks, speedy side dishes, and fruit desserts. You'll gain the skills needed to take the Cook for Good Challenge this summer: can you cook everything from scratch for a week? (Hint: yes you can!) Take home a cooking plan and recipes to use right away and to up your locavore score. Class time: 1 hour.

Using Thrift as a Path Towards Healthy People and Healthy Food Systems - A growing minority of people vote with their forks for pure food, humane treatment of workers and animals, a sustainable local food system, and the environment. Yet many people can't see the point of eating anything but the cheapest, most convenient, and "tastiest" food, no matter what their financial situation. This talk discusses four hurdles that keep people from eating healthy, local food and four opportunities to help people overcome them.

For more details, see the Cook for Good Coast-to-Coast Tour page and the schedule, with a list of confirmed and potential stops. If you are seriously considering hosting a stop, let me know and I'll send you more information. I'm hoping to reach a lot of people in the next six weeks and am eager to hear what you think might work in your community.

I won't be in your areas this time, but am already planning more tours. I'd love to come to San Diego & Philly. Jill, we did really try to make it down to see you, but California is a BIG state!
