Rosa DeLauro (D-CT)
Rosa is a 9th term Congresswoman from Connecticut's 3rd district. In 2006, she was elected with 76% of the vote. Rosa was born in New Haven, CT, on March 2, 1943. She is Catholic, and her highest degree was an MA from Columbia in 1966. Before she was elected, she had a career as a political adviser. Rosa is married to Stanley Greenberg. Greenberg is a pollster.

The reason why we care about her at the moment is because of her assignment to the Appropriations committee - the House committee that doles out the cash. Not only is she on the Appropriations committee - she heads up the subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and related agencies. That means, if we want money for something it goes through her. She also serves on the Budget committee.

Rosa cares quite a lot about food safety, as you can see from her statements here. In the past, she was also (unfortunately) supportive of the National Animal ID System (NAIS).

Bills By Rosa DeLauro
The Food Safety Modernization Act (H.R.875)

OrangeClouds115 :: Meet Your Leaders: Rosa DeLauro
To her credit, DeLauro co-sponsored Louise Slaughter's bill to restrict antibiotic use in animals, which was introduced in 2007 but not passed. From her website, DeLauro does have some positions listed which seem to be in line with our goals:

Fund Smart Growth Partnerships

  • preserve open spaces and clean up brownfields.
  • provides additional federal grants to build, extend and modernize light rail, subway and other mass transit systems.
  • promote sustainable, balanced commercial use of our vast system of public lands.

Promote Livable Communities

  • encourage urban redevelopment, promoting mass transit, or creating incentives for communities to protect farmlands, clean up abandoned industrial sites and safeguard waterways.

Land Preservation

  • preservation for open spaces and protection for natural treasures.
  • support full funding for our National Parks and protect our forests
  • stop commercial exploitation of environmentally sensitive land, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge(ANWR)

Safeguarding Our Waterways

  • we must rebuild declining fisheries and require that all fisheries be managed in a sustainable manner to prevent over-fishing.
  • clean-up the Long Island Sound and provide a steady stream of funding to safeguard it for future generations.
  • protect our watersheds by reducing non-point sources of pollution.

I'm just a little worried that those who have been funding her campaign might be confusing her a bit. Overall, agribusiness contributed $113,750 in the 2008 race (thus far). They are the 2nd highest contributor to her (by sector), second to labor.

According to on the issues, Rosa is a "hard core liberal." Her views include the following:

Rated 30% by the [U.S. Chamber of Commerce], indicating an anti-business voting record. (Dec 2003)

Rated 100% by the [Campaign for America's Future], indicating support for energy independence. (Dec 2006)

Rated 95% by the [League of Conservation Voters], indicating pro-environment votes. (Dec 2003)

Voted NO on implementing CAFTA, Central America Free Trade. (Jul 2005)

Voted NO on withdrawing from the WTO. (Jun 2000)

Rated 39% by CATO, indicating a mixed record on trade issues. (Dec 2002)

Rated 100% by [the American Public Health Association], indicating a pro-public health record. (Dec 2003)

From Open Secrets, here is where she gets her cash (2008 race only):

1. Lobbyists ($48,500)
2. Crop Production & Basic Processing ($45,000)
3. Health Professionals ($41,050)

Hey OC (4.00 / 4)
Nice blog you got here.  Congrats on the launch!

Good job (4.00 / 4)
I like a lot of her non-NAIS positions, so I'm glad you posted the full story.  I wonder if it's the dairy contributors that are behind her pro-NAIS position?  The confinement dairy industry has been a key player in developing and promoting NAIS.

Protect our farms - Stop NAIS!  Go to http://FarmAndRanchFreedom.org for more information.

NAIS, what a nightmare. is that clustref*&% of a plan (4.00 / 2)
floating around. I haven't heard much lately on the subject.

[ Parent ]
my theory is that they start using it as (4.00 / 2)
an excuse to make farmers in flooded states sign up in order to get any aid. But Rosa DeLauro is up to no good on NAIS. She's trying to demand that anyone who sells food to the school lunch program is registered for NAIS. Very bad idea.

[ Parent ]
I really hope we can stop it as it would kill people like me (4.00 / 2)
between the chickens and the others I'd be totally screwed. They will sneak it in one little step at a time if we let them.

And the worst part, it could actually be a good thing properly designed and implimented. As it seems to sit, it's just a way to stop the little guy from competeing.

Interestingly enough, here in Az. I can sell up to 20k worth of birds before any inspection requirements kick in.

The babies are 8 weeks tomorrow. I need to take some recent pics.

awww (4.00 / 2)
you oughta post a diary about your chicks. With the pictures, it will be awesome :)

I didn't realize you're in AZ. My extended family is all there so I tend to get over there quite a bit. I know the laws vary state by state as far as what you can legally slaughter before you need to go to a USDA inspected facility. If you can do 20k without inspection that seems pretty reasonable. What sort of added cost does NAIS pose?

[ Parent ]
costs will depend on how they set the program up (4.00 / 2)
I've seen everything from having to individually register every animal to flock registration. At this point with feed costs rising the way they are any additional costs will kill me. I need to be able to pull 3 a dozen wholesale to make a dime.

yup southern Arizona west of Tucson I love it here in the desert.

One of the local farmers market guys has already offered to buy all I can get him. Evidently there's not many small flocks around here.  If I don't have any more losses and they start to produce normally, I should be somewhere between 100 and 200 eggs a day. At least for a few years.

I lost 9 in a storm the other night. They spooked and squashed each other trying to pile in the darkest corner.   :(

It just started raining again so I need to go ck on them. At least no thunder or lightning tonight.

I have family in Steve Rothman's district... (4.00 / 1)
Was just wondering why he's on there...

He represents a completely 100% 'developed' urban / suburban district based in Bergen and Passaic Counties in Northern New Jersey.  As a matter of fact, it's probably even the congressional district in New Jersey with the least amount of farmers markets that I can think of.  And then it hit me -

Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies

Northern New Jersey is PharmaLand, so no comment...

On another note, why is the appropriations subcommittee for agriculture and rural development the same one subject to pharmaceutical industry influence?

"The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks." - Christopher Hitchens

Rosa DeLauro first came to my attention via (0.00 / 0)
my partner who pointed out that she was behind the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act. This week she dissed on the FDA, who must be suffering another lapse of judgment, as they're seem to be condoning the intentional contamination of foods with melamine, a dangerous and lethal substance. Melamine combined with cyanuric acid forms melamine cyanurate, which has been implicated in the Chinese protein export contaminations.
