How y'all are? (4.00 / 4)
Cold and rainy today, so I stayed inside and worked all day on a Farm FAQ, for people who want to know more about the farm and how I farm, handle livestock, etc. I'm going to put it up as a diary section by section (there are 3) and perhaps anyone who's interested can help me refine it, add, subtract, etc.

Was going to make raviolis, but didn't get around to it (Harold bought me a 'round to it once, but I seem to have misplaced it). Maybe I'll do raviolis tomorrow.

I also picked up a regular egg delivery in Canby today and a new CSA subscriber in Canby yesterday. Looking foreward to those. The egg delivery will start tomorrow, the new CSA subscriber will start probably the first week of April. The people getting the eggs may be interested in a CSA delivery too so I'm dropping off a new subscriber survey along with their eggs.

I'm going to be working on Sundays over at dad's garden in SE Portland, so I figured as long as I'm going to be there every Sunday, I might as well expand CSA deliveries to Portland. People interested in subscribing will be able to come pick up their shares on Sundays. I figured that's better than tooling around the city. I don't mind driving around Molalla, Canby or Aurora, but Portland I tend to stay out of if I can. Dad's place is right on the edge, so it's more like driving around Molalla, ;-)

We finally had some warmth today... (4.00 / 3)
After almost two weeks of on-again-off-again rain and chilly temps, we finally hit 65 today with sunny skies. And so far, tomorrow is looking good... Which helps, since I'll be marching with the local Democrats in the Henderson St. Patrick's Day Parade. :-)

Good luck this weekend... Wow, you'll be busy!

LOL on the weather out your way (4.00 / 4)
Mark and Dave, the hosts of one of my favorite radio talk shows was in LV on 'Mancation' last week or the week before. I think they did a remote on the Friday they were there from Planet Hollywood. They were talking about the weather when they got back. They were so looking foreward to warm weather and golfing, and they got weather just like they left here.....

On the weekends, those are usually my busiest days of the week, especially as more subscribers come online. I expanded my delivery hours on Saturday to 11:00am-4:00pm, it used to go till 2:00pm.

So did they have fun in Vegas? (4.00 / 3)
I know it sucks on those rare occasions when we actually get rain (though it's caused a much needed respite from our severe drought!), but there is still plenty of fun to be had even during lousy weather. Did they have any thoughts on CityCenter (right across from PHo)?

Oh, they always have a good time! (4.00 / 4)
You can see the pictures of Mancation 4 at their Mark and Dave Cult Pages. I really enjoy listening to them, after a day of listening to Thom Hartman in the morning and Lars in the afternoon, I really look foreward to their show. Their kind of like the middle, no pressure ground in a sea of heavily polarized talk radio....

Ha! They were right by my house! (4.00 / 3)
I see they visited the Legacy Golf Course. Funny enough, I'm just across Pittman Wash from Legacy! I could have waved hi from my condo. :-)

Next year! (4.00 / 3)
You can wave hi to them next year. They go on Mancation every year. They're already planning next year's trip, and they'll probably play the same courses.

Michael Convery is the traffic guy on the station, and every show they play a game called 'Believe it or don't' where they ask a question and Convery has to say if he believes it or not. If he wins he gets a point, if he looses Mark and Dave get a point, at the end of the week, as they say, 'the looser buys lunch'. There is a point awarded one way or the other for each of the three questions each day. It's a fun show.

As I said before, I listen to talk radio all day every day, that means I'm listening to different hosts for 12-14 hours/day 7 days/week. I listen to fairly equal measures of liberal and conservative talk until 4:00pm, and even though the hosts do, I think, try to be fair to guests and the topics they cover, they are actually very polarized and each side can call names and be very contentious. Both sides have politicians from the other side of the isle scared off, so for the most part it's democrats only as guests on the liberal shows and republicans only on the conservative shows.

But everyone goes on Mark and Dave's show because they're respectful to people without being a door matt, if you know what I mean. They talk about and debate all sorts of local and national issues, but they really don't bash or harangue people like the other hosts. In all of my travels on talk radio (I've been listening like this for the past 20 years) they're the only ones I've run across who are like this. Such a shame, and it would be a great loss if they ever were to leave the air.

I guess there can be such a thing... (4.00 / 3)
As too much black truffle.

Black truffles - the good melanosporum ones from the Perigord region of France - are best when cooked in dishes.

White truffles release their full bouquet when raw. Black when cooked (being less pungent, black needs heat to fully release its aroma).

A shaving of black truffles might impress Mr. and Mrs. Fannypacker from Bumfudge, Utah, but it does nothing for ELV or his staff.

And it doesn't add much to a dish, except pretension.

And it really didn't add anything to an otherwise excellent Alsatian tart flambee.

They don't do this in France, and they shouldn't do it here. But we swear to god we've had the big black truffle shower bestowed upon us at least ten times in the last few months...all to zero effect, except that the restaurant staff(s) (at Jean-George Steakhouse, Sirio, and Sage just to name a few) thought they were impressing us.

But they were only impressing two things upon us: 1) they're getting inferior truffles cheap; and 2) they think ELV was born yesterday.

Memo to all pretentious restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip: Stop shaving raw black truffles entirely, or learn how to use them for taste, not affectation.

It really is too bad, as I otherwise LOVE Spago and its fabulous pizzas. While y'all know I have no problem admitting to my "food snobbery", I just don't like pretentious food that's expensive for the sake of being expensive. Either use the truffles properly or don't ruin an otherwise lovely pizza.

kitchen is a mess (4.00 / 4)
Last night I made a birthday dinner for my daughter (her bdy is Mon) for my daughter and some of her friends. I borrowed a tagine from Aliza my friend the chef and I made vegetarian tagine w/ fava beans and chick peas. I had never used a tagine before and the liguid (stock from cooking potatoes) kept boiling over and hence the stove is covered.Anyway the tagine was WONDERFUL. I also used sweet potatoes/butternut squash and zucchini. Spices used...of course saffron cumin.cinnamon, smoked paprika   and a little of some spice known as Moroccan spice taken from Alizas spice collection. It has some unknown spice in it.I also used preserved lemons in the fridge. I made Moroccan flat bread w/anise and for desert I made tahina organge cake (vegan) and vanilla ice cream and a local vegan frozen desert http://www.kovfoods.com/flavor... (Jill its really good )
