13 House Republicans won't express support for school lunch program

I saw on the Down With Tyranny blog that a House resolution on the National School Lunch Program passed on Thursday:

H.Res.362 [...] expresses the House's support for the goals and ideals of the National School Lunch Program and "recognizes that our pupils deserve access to high-quality, safe, and nutritious meals in school." It passed 403-13, every Democrat and 155 Republicans, including the entire GOP congressional leadership voting in favor.

The roll call reveals the shameful list of 13 Republicans who voted against this resolution: Todd Akin (MO-02), Paul Broun (GA-10), Jason Chaffetz (UT-03), Jeff Flake (AZ-06), Virginia Foxx (NC-05), Scott Garrett (NJ-05), Doug Lamborn (CO-05), Cynthia Lummis (WY-AL), Tom McClintock (CA-04), Ron Paul (TX-14), Ted Poe (TX-02), James Sensenbrenner (WI-05), and John Shadegg (AZ-03).

Usually when a House vote is that lopsided, I can count on Representative Steve King (R, IA-05) to be on the embarrassing end of the roll call. However, I'm happy to report that even the occasionally mean-spirited, uncompassionate, clueless, dare I say cartoon-villain-like King recognizes that "our pupils deserve access to high-quality, safe, and nutritious meals in school."

Ah, Good Ole' Scott Garrett... (4.00 / 2)
One of the original knuckle-dragging "Mountain Men" of the Northwestern NJ GOP, along with Rick Merkt, Mike Carroll, Guy Gregg and a few others.

Be grateful you haven't met the rest of the gang, heh.  One of them in Congress is more than bad enough.

Garrett's district, NJ-05, was represented for many years by the last of NJ's 'moderate' Republicans, Marge Roukema, before redistricting in 2002 convinced her to retire rather than face a third primary against Garrett, which he probably would have won in the new (more Republican) district.  Still, the district's only an R+7, NJ's highest R district, and he's had more close races in the past 8 years than any other New Jersey Congressman of either party, almost certainly because he's an unhinged sociopath.

There are some pretty damned poor rural farming communities in his district, too.  I wonder if anybody (Democrat or even a slightly saner Republican) can make something out of this for a 2010 challenge against him?  What disgraceful company he keeps.  He's gotta be by far the biggest embarrassment in the Northeast.

Ah, forgot about this one until now... (4.00 / 2)
Scott Garrett Voted NO on reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act in 2006.

Another in his long line of Greatest Hits...

yes, he is certainly among the "worst of the worst" (4.00 / 3)
by any standard. Did you know there's a Retire Garrett blog?

[ Parent ]
Nice! (4.00 / 2)
Great to see they're still working at it.  When I was back in Jersey, I spent most of my time knocking on doors to retire Mike Ferguson (who chose not to run in 2008), since he was the closest Republican Congressman to me at the time.  Never did get to work against Garrett myself, though.  I do remember (ultimately disappointing) nights watching results for NJ-07 and NJ-05 while working for Steve Brozak and Linda Stender in NJ-07 in 2004 and 2006, respectively...

Even if Garrett holds on for 2010, NJ's probably losing a House Seat after the census.  Should be interesting to see who gets drawn out.  NJ's redistricting process is pretty 'bipartisan' (read: incumbent protection scheme), but it'll almost certainly be Garrett or Leonard Lance (who took over Ferguson's seat) who gets drawn out.  My money's om Garrett, mainly because nobody likes him.  Stay tuned!

hey--thx for the link (4.00 / 3)
that's me over at Retire Garrett.  What a lucky guy I am to have this "compassionate conservative" as my Rep.

Paul Broun (4.00 / 3)
I love that guy. He's a total waste of space in Congress but he's such a nut that it's funny. He's the one who wanted Congress to declare 2010 the "Year of the Bible."
