I've read postings in reference to the trans fats in some, or all girl scout cookies. Interesting reads, very informative and I guess I shouldn't be surprised now...I'm new at this...bare with me ;)
tabetha :: Having issues with girl scout cookies; Is it just me???
I am, or should I say WAS a girl scout cookie fanatic. Now is the time for girl scout cookies so I was on the look out. It didn't take long for me to spot a group of eager girl scouts right outside of walmart. This was my last errand run for the day, so I was eager to retrieve my box of samoas asap. They didn't have to come to me I was ready and make a b-line right there. So I made my purchase, 1 box only. That was a surprise for me, but now thinking about it, maybe god sent??? Well I didn't wait to get home, or go to my car for my long awaited treat. I opened my box of samoas asap inside of walmart. I gave one to my daughter, her dad didn't want any (good). So that left me with the rest, and yes, I did ask my daughter if she wanted more, but was not into the coconut too much. My daughter's dad reads labels these days, we both do (another story). So reading along he read the ingredients. He mentioned the word sorbitol, I said, "no way! are you sure"? He handed me the box and there it was. Basically if I'm not mistaken sorbitol is used in sugarless and sugarfree products, right? And that would be the same category as aspartine, phylen(sp) etc. I avoid foods with those ingredients in there and more so diet drinks too. That stuff is awful, and gives me headaches and the after taste is the worst. So after consuming more than half the box, I'm cool and really disappointed at there cheapy alternative, or diet methods?

Oh yuck (4.00 / 2)
We've got some samoas in the house here I think, because our resident Girl Scout likes them. If she's eaten any Girl Scout cookies thus far, she didn't get them from me. I've dealt with it by baking home made chocolate chip cookies frequently so there's a better alternative around the house.

Another thing that didn't please me was the preservative used in Thin Mints. I forget what it was - an acronym of 4 letters. I'm not quite sure what the heck it is but I don't want it on any cookies I plan to eat.

Well so much for their cookies in general! (4.00 / 1)
I was actually thinking about purchasing thin mints before I bought the samoas instead. I guess I just had this idea that girl scout cookies were sorta on this same agenda as organic products, or better for you products???

I didn't realize that you recommended my read...well thank you...I am new @ this once again. And I will stay tuned, or more tuned-in I should say with this website. And check out your posts. You've been doing this for sometime?

You should just buy them... (4.00 / 2)
...and consider it a contribution to the Girl Scouts. Then throw them way. With all the chemicals in them, they don't even make good compost. Michael Pollan calls that kind of stuff "edible foodlike substances."

I voted. What was I voting for? (I'm a compulsive voter, I guess.)

Yankee Frugality: use it up, wear it out, make it last, or do without.

why bother buying them? (4.00 / 3)
just give a few bucks to the Girl Scout troop as a donation.

So they don't end up (4.00 / 2)
in someone else's stomach? My first thought was also to just make a donation. Then it occurred to me that two purposes could be served at once.

I know... (4.00 / 2)
just for donation purposes only...again it's not like it's the girls fault who are selling the cookies anyhow...

good point (4.00 / 1)
good point about using reusables for compost heaps. I guess I just had this idea that girl scout cookies were about good-quality, high-end ingredients...seriously that's what I thought, but I never took the time to read ingredients period up until somewhat recent...

Thanks for the input... (4.00 / 3)
I appreciate the comments to my post...I guess it makes sense to just donate and that's about it. It's not like it's the girl scouts who are @ fault anyways. So again much appreciated...

hmmm....maybe I should get ahold of the manufacturers or something??? well see...

history (4.00 / 1)
Cookies have been a Girl Scout fundraiser since the 1930s, and one of the two major companies has been baking them for nearly that long. The ingredients issue is not new for them, they have vigorously defended the product for years. Their main response is, cookies are a luxury and not the main part of anybody's diet, so why worry?

Nevertheless, continued contact with the Girls Scouts about this issue wouldn't hurt, even though it might not help.

Given the current obesity problem (4.00 / 2)
The Girl Scouts are ostriches with their heads in the sand. I refuse to buy cookies. I make a donation instead. This confuses people. They say, "Are you SURE you don't want the cookies?

Good Reasons to Buy Bad Cookies (4.00 / 1)
The nutrition facts for all of the cookies are posted here. Like Anonymous Bosch said, Michael Pollan would call them "edible food-like substances."

I don't eat them myself, but I buy them every time they're offered and I buy a lot of them. Supporting Girl Scouts has an incredible return on investment. Girls who belong to Scouts (or who participate in sports) are less likely to have unwanted pregnancies and more likely to go to college. Here are some women who were Girl Scouts. Not bad company to be in.

So, I bring them to work and leave them out for the Engineers, who will eat just about anything.

By all means, feel free to make an at-will donation and leave the cookies behind!
