Yes, this song still haunts me. No really, we hear it everywhere here. But in this case, I guess Katy Perry really is right...

That's what you get for waking up in Vegas!

So what do you get for waking up in Vegas? Well, you get some great choices for breakfast. Let me explain on all your mouthwatering choices for starting the day off right in "Sin City".

Follow me after the flip for more...

Society: The Classy Way to Start One's Day

Tucked away in a corner in the fabulous Encore at Wynn Las Vegas is Society Cafe. Chef Kim Canteenwalla presides over this lovely little "casual cafe cum upscale comfort food given a major makeover" joint and cooks quite the tasty breakfast. Start off with some freshly squeezed and organic fruit juice while you peruse the menu and make those tough decisions.

The omelette or the frittata? The "XL Sticky Bun" or the buckwheat pancakes? Decisions, decisions!

My favorite is the Frosted Flake (coated) French Toast with caramelized bananas, chocolate cream, and organic maple syrup. It may sound like "sugar overload", but just give it a taste... And you'll see why it's become my "breakfast of champions".

First Food & Bar: Oh So Hipster, But Oh So Satisfying

OK, so you're hungover and you just stumbled out of bed totally drunk, dazed, and confused. What to do? Trust Chef Sammy DeMarco to wake you up gently and "just the right way" at First Food & Bar at The Palazzo.

Just look at this breakfast menu! How can you say no to freshly baked donuts? You just can't!

One also can't resist a good ol' fashioned 'shroom omelette with goat cheese. I knew I couldn't, so I ordered one... With a cup of fresh fruit salad and a wedge of bread pudding. Everything tasted great, especially that omelette full of tangy cheese and juicy mushrooms!

And since I was there for Sunday Brunch, I only had to pay $7 extra to make it a "Champagne Brunch" with a bottle of nice California bubbly. Isn't that sweet!

Now speaking of Sunday Brunch, there's one place that absolutely can't be missed for the best fresh plates, best made to order "buffet" variety, and best drinks to cure (or is that add to?) the hangover. Yes, my dears, I'm talking about Simon at Palms Place!

"Celebrity Chef" Kerry Simon was out to make "food that makes a statement" when he opened his namesake restaurant at The Palms' new "condotel" tower, and he's certainly achieved it so far with his much celebrated Sunday Brunch. Utilizing the best seasonal and organic ingredients, his culinary team has turned simple brunch fare into something quite extraordinary.

Start with a saunter over to the bar for a good bellini or bloody mary ($7-8 extra for unlimited booze), then stop and admire the freshly baked pastries... And start devouring those bear claws and beignets! It's OK, you're in Vegas now so you're supposed to commit some sin!

Once you're done gorging off the pastry baskets, try something lighter. Have the sushi chef make you a divine avocado roll that's spicy yet still creamy and refreshing. Or perhaps, have the panini chef make you a panino with fig jam and bleu cheese that's simultaneously sweeet, tangy, savory, tart, and oh so yummy!

Oh, and don't leave without ordering off the menu. It's included in the $38 "admission fare". My favorite so far is the Frosted Flake (coated) Brioche French Toast paired with fresh blueberries and raspberries, then topped with organic maple syrup. If there's one french toast that can give Society's a real competition, it's this one!

So I hope this helps. Whenever you wake up in Vegas, remember these places for breakfast/brunch. This will make you want to wake up in Vegas more often. Trust me. ;-)

Tips for a hungry locavore gourmand? (4.00 / 3)
I can't help it. I'm in the most dynamic culinary hot spot in America! :-D

I can't help but notice... (4.00 / 3)
There are no rice & beans shots?  What's all that other stuff?  Food exists beyond rice & beans?!

;-P

Thanks for the tour...

YES! We have FOOD! Rich, sinful, delicious FOOD! (4.00 / 2)
It won't be long before you get sucked in, Jay. It's what happens when one comes here. The food is just too yummy to be missed, and there are too many naughty delights to pass up.

But don't worry, eating here doesn't always have to bust one's budget. Next installment, we'll be discussing cheap eats... And even here you won't be limited to rice & beans. ;-)

Thanks for the tips! (4.00 / 3)
I'll have to investigate more of these places for myself and do a future installment on vegan cuisine in Vegas. :-)

tendrils (4.00 / 2)
A side dish on the Society menu (not for breakfast) is spring peas and tendrils. What are tendrils, I haven't seen those here yet, but I suppose they are coming.

Pea tendrils

Other names: dau miu, pea shoots

Young leaves and shoots of the snow pea plant and taste like a cross between peas and spinach. Chinese call them dau miu and use them in soups and stir-fries. Just treat them as you would any other green like spinach.

Buy at Asian grocery store

Society looks like a dangerous place. Fruit Loops and XL Sticky Bun for breakfast, XXXL Chocolate Cake to finish off a long hard day...a person could damage his health.

Hey! Vegas is a town for sinners, not saints. ;-) (4.00 / 2)
Live it up. Eat it up. This is what Vegas is all about!

hash (4.00 / 2)
This one omnivore says a restaurant can't be taken seriously as a breakfast place without offering top quality corned beef hash. Not a pile of potatoes seasoned with flecks of corned beef, but a pile of corned beef seasoned with lots of onions and some potatoes.

Simon offers corned beef hash and First has brisket hash, so they're in the running until I'm able to sample the fare. Society loses.

Best corned beef hash I've had so far was in a restaurant halfway to nowhere, on a lonely highway connecting Bigfork and Swan Lake, Montana. I remember it because finding good corned beef hash is a rare experience.

Hmmm, I wonder why Society... (4.00 / 2)
Doesn't offer any hash on the menu? I guess they think they're too "upscale" for it? Whatever, since (as you duly noted) First and Simon have hash on the menu. I haven't tried Simon's (since there's no meatless version), but I can say First does hash quite well.

vegetarian hash (4.00 / 2)
Is that

Roasted Tomatoes & Vegetables Thing

?

[ Parent ]
Yeah, something like that... (4.00 / 2)
It's good. But honestly, my fave so far is the "Stardust Omelet" with home fries and a nice big "Bag o' Donuts". Seriously, First's donuts are SO ADDICTIVE! :-D

Act on Principles and make equality happen.

[ Parent ]
I was afraid you mistook (4.00 / 2)
the Bag o' Donuts for the hash!

[ Parent ]
No, my wind just wanders... (4.00 / 2)
And does weird things when I think of those DONUTS! They're so hot, so sweet, so chewy, and so fresh. I swear, they're highly addictive. If I see you LVLers in town this summer, I'm taking you all to First so we can chow down on donuts and hash and omelettes and all sorts of other morning delights...

That is, unless you want to do Sunday Brunch with Simon...

Mmmm, beignets and sushi! :-D

Scones (4.00 / 2)
None of those three restaurants offers scones. Interesting note about passing fancies - scones used to be everywhere.

And none of those places offers to put ice cream on my pancakes - hey, do I have to think of everything? How can I be expected to eat my plate of gingerbread pancakes (also not on any of the menus) in the pool, without a scoop of orange ice cream on top?

After you try Simon's beignets... (4.00 / 2)
You won't miss the scones. Trust me! :-D

And btw, you actually bring up a good idea on pairing ice cream with pancakes. When it gets scorching hot here over summer, that would actually work out quite well.

Oh, and another btw... Speaking of hash and pancakes, I'll be talking plenty about both later this week when I write about "morning cheap eats in Vegas". Don't worry, you don't always have to sacrifice good taste to save a few bucks in this town. (Hint: Just go off-Strip. We'll be going off-Strip in my next installment.) :-)
