As of today, Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch put out new recommendations on seafood to eat and avoid. They also have a 60-page report on the state of the oceans (PDF). From their research, the best seafood choices as of October 2009 are as follows:

Albacore Tuna (Troll or pole-caught)
Mussels (farmed)
Oysters (farmed)
Pacific sardines (wild-caught)
Pink shrimp (wild caught from Oregon)
Salmon (wild-caught from Alaska)
Spot Prawns (wild-caught from British Columbia)
Rainbow Trout (farmed)

As you can tell, even when you're buying the right species, it's also important to know where your fish was caught or raised, and whether it was farmed or not.

Ooooh! (4.00 / 3)
I don't know about the other seafood, but I'm with them 100% on wild salmon from Alaska and farmed mussels.

Do they have any opinion about fresh mackerel -- or even canned mackerel?  I love fresh mackerel: sauteed in oil, then remove the whole fish (minus its head, if you're squeamish) and add some sour cream to the pan drippings, make that into a sauce, and serve over the mackerel.

Yum.  My second lover -- who is Norwegian -- taught me to make that.

Canned mackerel is pretty good as fish cakes -- think in terms of fish hamburgers -- I usually get the king mackerel from Thailand.  Mackerel has tons of Omega-3s.

The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found. -- Calvin Trillin

check out the new rankings. There are some pretty big changes in there.
