Two New Farm to School Bills!

The Children's Fruit and Vegetable Act was introduced by Sam Farr with 15 co-sponsors. While the text is not yet online, the bill intends to increase the availability of (you guessed it) fresh fruits and veggies in school cafeterias - including $50 million in mandatory funding for the Farm to School Program. This bill now sits in the rather progressive House Education and Labor Committee and the not-so-progressive Agriculture Committee.

And - as it turns out - that's just one bill of two that provides $50 million in mandatory funding to Farm to School. The other is a soon-to-be-introduced bill by Rep. Rush Holt. Stay tuned and I will post details about these bills here as they become available.

Rush Holt... (4.00 / 1)
Looking forward to seeing his bill, he's always been my favorite Jersey congressman, although I never lived in his district.  He's by far the most progressive of the lot of 'em.  Which isn't really saying much, but still...

Love his campaign bumper stickers, btw.

My Congressman is a rocket scientist!

Jealous of the Jerseyans! (4.00 / 2)
Sounds like a cool legislator.  It reminds me of something my physics professor used to say:  "You don't have to be a rocket scientist, but it doesn't hurt."

Heh, no need to be... (4.00 / 1)
Besides Rush Holt and (sometimes) Frank Pallone and Bill Pascrell, the rest of my old state's Congresscritters are some of the most useless in the country.

The really good Jersey politicians know to just stay close to home, and far away from the mess that is the State Legislature, or the Party Bosses (north or south) they'd have to deal with to pick up the rare open seat for a US House district in Jersey.  And the US Senate?  Pffft, fugheddaboutit!

Rush Holt was the last decent to break into "the club", and that was almost 12 years ago now...

Skimmed the text of the bill (4.00 / 2)
I'm pleased to see that in addition to increasing the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables in school lunches, the proposal criteria also emphasize small farms, local food systems, and community cooperation.  Getting kids to eat fresh produce is half the battle.  (There were things that were nominally fruits and vegetables available when I was a kid, but I didn't eat them because they were flavorless, textureless, or otherwise gross.)  Hopefully making local produce available will give kids the chance to discover what fresh fruits and veggies really taste like!
