All Your Baby Are Belong To... Bisphenol A?

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel brings us news this morning of a new study conducted by the Environmental Working Group which finds 9 out of 10 babies are born with the chemical in their system -

Previous studies have found BPA in the urine of 93% of Americans tested. But Wednesday's study is the first to find it in the cord blood of U.S. newborns.

"It's alarming," Janet Gray, director of the Environmental Risks and Breast Cancer project at Vassar College, said of the study results. "What more evidence do we need to act?"

More than 6 billion pounds of BPA are used each year to make polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. The chemical is used in thousands of common products, including the lining of nearly all food and beverage cans and as coating for carbonless paper receipts.

FDA was supposed to complete their latest 'review' on the use of BPA on Monday, but the decision has been postponed.  Since we're already into December, I'm assuming the decision will not be made until well after the New Year.  Or, just like their first decision in 2008... maybe they'll sneak the news that they plan to do nothing into another end-of-the-week news dump sometime around, say, December 23 or 24?  Pardon my cynicism.

Many studies have linked BPA exposure to everything from increased risks for obesity by triggering fat-cell activity, to diabetes, heart disease in women, fertility defects, an increased risk of developing breast cancer later in life from fetal exposure, and erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems in men.

my State Rep has a bill that would prohibit use (4.00 / 2)
of BPA in baby bottles. The bill is stalled. Its PA H.B. 221

Maybe Rep Curry would guest blog on the subject. He's PA State Rep Larry Curry. If you're interested and  contact him use my name. And if he wants to guest blog and needs help (he's old school in the techie department) I'm available to help.

BPA in baby bottles. (4.00 / 2)
Sounds like prohibiting its use in baby bottles is too little too late. The ban needs to be broader.

I wonder what alternative(s) would emerge from a ban? A return to glass containers?

Exactly... (4.00 / 2)
The "baby bottle" bans are because they can get them done now.  After all, who's gonna vote against protecting babies?

Of course, it gets much thornier when it comes to protecting the rest of us...

There are other alternatives out there to BPA (Eden Organics doesn't use BPA in its canned beans), and then there's also just good ole' fashioned 'whatever-they-used-before-BPA-came-along' alternatives.  Which I can't name offhand.  But then there's another question - who's testing the new BPA alternatives to make sure they're any better.  Can we trust them?

Shit, I'm sticking with glass jars and stainless steel water canteens, myself.

BPA in cans (4.00 / 2)
I wonder if BPA is in fizzy drinks cans, including beer. Anybody know?

Yes... (4.00 / 2)
Beer and soda cans both.

OK... (4.00 / 2)
glad to say I don't drink fizzy drinks that come in cans or plastic bottles.

Thanks for posting, Jay! (4.00 / 3)

How the heck did we reach that exalted level?

Jay, when did we get to 1300 registrants? Wasn't it like a week ago?

Welcome aboard, Amy.

[ Parent ]
Jay might want to check for spammers (4.00 / 3)
Unfortunately, some of the soapblox sites have seen an influx of spam accounts in recent months. These people register an account and never post a diary or comment, but they have spam links in their account profile. I delete them from Bleeding Heartland.

[ Parent ]
I know for a fact (4.00 / 2)
that some recent registrants are as you say, because I checked their profiles. But gosh, the influx in the last few days has been startling.

I thought it might mostly be because of Jill's sheduled trip to Chicago - I don't know if she actually went, though, or if she ventured elsewhere after Chicago.

The last time this happened, both Jay and Jill were traveling (middle of October). I thought one or both of them must have been out spreading favorable impressions.

[ Parent ]
Yeah... (4.00 / 2)
What desmoinesdem said above.  And you saw it, too.

It would be a full-time job to delete all the spam accounts, though!  I just stick to deleting their spam diaries (like the one that was just posted earlier this afternoon) and comments whenever I catch them.

Which I always do...

:)
