NYT on Having a Pesticide Lobbyist in the Obama Administration

The NYT has a WONDERFUL editorial about the nomination of CropLife lobbyist Islam A Siddiqui:

The White House has nominated Mr. Siddiqui for the position of chief agricultural negotiator in the office of the United States trade representative. He is presently a vice president at CropLife America, a coalition of the major industrial players in the pesticide industry, including Syngenta, Monsanto, Dow Chemical and DuPont. That job doesn't seem to square with the Obama administration's professed interest in more sustainable, less chemically dependent approaches to agriculture.

The op ed notes that "the business of CropLife - an arm of which openly scoffed at Michelle Obama's plans for an organic garden - is to increase exports of agricultural chemicals." They conclude that "This seems too narrow a perspective given the administration's interest in the more organic approach favored by many consumers and farmers... The negotiator we need is someone who can represent a broad view of American agriculture." Hell yeah!

Bullshit indeed (4.00 / 2)
The NYT editorial is bullshit. We want it to be true - OK, I understand that. But I repeat - I repeat again, I tire of this - show me one scintilla of evidence that Obama wants to or intends to deviate from the federal government's long-standing committment to genetic engineering and the destruction of indigenous agricultures to make the world safe for American agriculture.

In passing, I note that the NYT mischaracterizes CropLife, just as the Politico writer did. CropLife is for two things, genetic engineering AND ag chemicals, not just ag chemicals. The two things are related, of course, but for some reason I'm irritated by lackwits who wilfully refuse to notice.

Wasn't Obama suppose to be the president that... (4.00 / 3)
wasn't going to have any lobbyist in his administration?

Well as a vice president at CropLife America he's not really a lobbyist. He's more like the guy that handed over the bribe money and sent the lobbyist to pay off and talk elected officials into keeping shit like Atrazine in our drinking water.

he was a registered lobbyist (4.00 / 1)
a few years ago. For CropLife.
