Chicken Poop Alert!

Did your burger eat chicken poop? Besides being gross, this is one of the so-called "mad cow loopholes." Let me explain.

Chickens are notoriously messy eaters. Debeak them and then they are even messier eaters. They can be fed rendered cow remains. Then the cows can be fed chicken litter - which includes chicken poop, feathers, and dropped chicken food. Thus, cows can still eat cows.

That much is not news. Here's the news. Consumers Union and FACT (Food Animal Concerns Trust) have filed a petition with 37,000 signatures opposing the practice of feeding chicken litter to cows and asking for it to be banned. The FDA has until November 11 to respond to their petition. I am very eager to hear what the FDA will say about this.

Oh gag (4.00 / 2)
Yet another reason not to eat meat. I really need to make the vegetarian transition. Surprisingly, it's not the actual meat, it's chicken broth that I would have a hard time saying goodbye to. As it is, I need to start making my own chicken stock - I have less and less trust for the mass produced stuff.

OT - I owe you an email. Thank you very much for yours the other day.

Try veggie broth? (4.00 / 2)
There's even chicken flavored veggie broth. Although I've just transitioned to making my own veggie broth. If you cook up onions, celery, and carrots together you'll get a pretty tasty broth for any soup. Get a good ratio of them though. Too many carrots makes it too sweet.

I've never understood the value in (4.00 / 2)
making vegetables taste like meat for vegetarians/vegans. I always figured that if eating meat was wrong, then eating pretend meat would be just as wrong?

If you want to eat a diet that doesn't use meat then why would you still eat vegetable products that are made to taste like meat?

Not saying that it's good or bad/right or wrong, just that I'm confused. If I want meat, I eat meat, if I want vegetables, I eat vegetables.

I'm not much for the fake meat either (4.00 / 1)
I don't really get it.

Yeah, I'm with you (4.00 / 1)
Although I do wonder about smoke tofu. I'd think that it would take the smoke flavor readily. In that case I'd like to taste the flavor of the tofu and the smoke. But not pretend that the smoked tofu tasted like smoked turkey.

I think that foods like tofu are able to stand on their own.

The Chinese eat tofu to eat tofu, not to eat pretend-meat. Non-vegetarians eat tofu in China.

If you want to stay with chicken broth (4.00 / 3)
find someone who raises their own birds/hatches their own birds' eggs, and buy surplus roosters from them, or better yet, find someone who will raise heritage cockerels for you on contract. Those birds will make wonderful stock and you can have them raised to your specifications.

One way to get ahold of someone or put out the word that you're looking for that type of service provider is to go around to the feed stores in your area, talk to the managers and/or put up a flyer on their bullitin boards.

I don't know where you live, but even if you're in a large metropolitan area, there will be feed stores in the outlying areas.
