Well, technically it's not my business, not at all, but I feel like it's my business.  You see, I met Mareya because she was the only person to hold an "Eat-in" in Orange County to show support for important changes to the The Child Nutrition Act which is reauthorized every four years and has a huge impact on what hundreds of thousands of kids eat every day at lunch.  I wanted to attend her eat-in because I believe strongly in supporting Slow Food's agenda.

The eat-in did not happen, not enough people responded.  It was disheartening but we promised we would meet up anyway and talk about our passions regarding food issues.  I thought I might have a partner for the Aliso Viejo Community Garden.  I knew I might make a friend and an ally.  Only good things could come from this.

So we met a few weeks later and I learned more about her business, I insisted on learning more about it, Eat Cleaner, All Natural Food Wash and Wipes.  I was intrigued and to be honest, I was out of work and thought maybe there was an opportunity for a job.

But Mareya's business wasn't even at that point yet, she was still working on getting the word out but I was happy to help out when I could.  When I looked over the website, I saw that she was already blogging away and when we spoke about food issues, I heard about how she was already knowledgeable about all the things I was passionate about, from big AG, food safety issues, nutrition, kid's health, etc.  It was amazing.  I was just so impressed by this woman, her passion and her willingness to take that great leap.  Mareya quit her six figure job to start this business with her father.  She was quickly becoming one of my favorite people.  I was inspired.

And obviously Inc. Magazine recognized this potential as well.  Mareya's company one of five finalists as a Newpreneur of the Year.

Newpreneur: A new breed of entrepreneurs who are using the recession as a catalyst to start a business or develop an idea. Using an innovative approach, they seize each opportunity with passion and ambition. By relying on emerging technologies, trusted resources and successful mentors, they take their business to the next level.

So what can Eat Cleaner, All Natural Wipes and Wash get when they win?  A $100,000 in business grants.  That's a lot in grants and it's a lot of money for any start up.

So why this company?  I will tell you more about Mareya's business...

But here is the story that Mareya tells on her website...

Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands!

Dr. Ibrahim (aka 'dad') Colorado State University Emeritus Professor and Ph.D., Environmental Health Science has been an accomplished writer and professor for over 30 years, and began challenging government agencies to strengthen food safety procedures after receiving contaminated seafood at his local grocery store. As the demo manager and editor of Alfalfa's Markets monthly magazine, "Healthy Choices," I began my food and retail marketing career writing about sustainable agriculture and food safety issues (Food, not Phood) over 15 years ago.

About 2 1/2 years ago, dad was diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer.  I had just had my youngest son and felt as though the ground had fallen beneath me.  My dad has always been my rock.  But, thanks to early detection and a diet filled with clean fruit, vegetables and lean protein, he continues to inspire us all.   That's what sparked the fire.  Life is uncertain and everyday, we make decisions.  Eat Cleaner was a natural way for us to help others that care about their families take a small step towards improving their health.

Quote From Mareya
When it comes to health, we all want to do the right thing but half-truths and inconclusive information can clutter an otherwise logical vision. Our EAT CLEANER™ mission is to set the record straight on what's on our plates and help everyone take matters into their own hands.

It goes beyond a product.  It's a way of life

Mareya has become my new hero and I'm asking you to help me by helping her.  Please vote for Eat Cleaner.  You don't have to register or anything, you just have to check off Eat Cleaner as your choice! (http://www.inc.com/newpreneur/vote.html) Please support this progressive business and someone who will fight for better food safety laws and promotes eating lower on the food chain to help not only our health but our environment.

Here are some FAQS from the site...

Q. What is Eat Cleaner?

A. EAT CLEANER™ is the only all-natural, tasteless and odorless food wash + wipes for produce, seafood and poultry that is lab proven to remove over 99.9+% of Salmonella and E.coli from the surface of food. Q. I've never washed my food with anything other than water. Why do I need Eat Cleaner?

A.Most produce is waxed to withstand the average 1,500 mile journey and over 20 sets of hands from field to fork. Wax seals in pesticide residue and debris, which can not be removed with water. There were 78 million reported cases of food borne illness and 5,000 deaths last year in the U.S. alone. We believe the time is ripe to Eat Cleaner. Those with weak systems, particularly infants, children, pregnant women and the elderly are sensitive to foodborne illness and pesticide exposure.

Q. How does Eat Cleaner work?

A.  EAT CLEANER™ products are formulated to strip away wax to thoroughly cleanse residues and dirt trapped under the surface. EAT CLEANER™ also removes surface debris from seafood and poultry and effectively cleans food preparation and cutting surfaces to help deter cross contamination. Statistics show about 80% of food borne illness is attributed to poor food handling practices. With daily food recalls and outbreaks, our mantra is Think Before You Bite. As parents and grandparents, the two set out to create a line of products that helps consumers put food safety into their own hands.

Q. I've heard of produce washes. What makes Eat Cleaner different?

A. Eat Cleaner is a comprehensive line of patent pending food safety products , featuring a Wash + Dryer Kit System with a concentrate Fruit + Vegetable Wash and Scrub Brush, 8 oz. Fruit + Vegetable Wash Spray, 8 oz. Seafood + Poultry Wash Spray, 6-Ct. Individually Wrapped Wipes in a Reusable Pouch and a 30-Ct. box of Individually Wrapped Wipes. It do not contain alcohol nor leave a flavor nor odor on produce and it has a low sudsing level, unlike the other brands. It also a lab tested, proven product that's uniquely formulated to prolong shelf life and inhibit browning . It can be used directly on food, cutting surfaces, utensils and even hands. The ergonomically shaped bottles and attractive design encourage keeping the product within a hand's reach of food preparation. Wipes are a convenient way to enjoy healthy snacking on the go.

Eat Cleaner was officially launched in August, 2009. The company was founded by Mareya Ibrahim , a food marketing veteran and food safety advocate with her father Dr. Shawki Ibrahim, Colorado State University Emeritus Professor and Ph.D. in Environmental Science, M.A. in Agriculture, the formulator of the product line.
