Pardon me for nearly falling out of bed in shock when I saw this press release (below). I swear, this looks like the work of the Yes Men. Especially this quote:

In my role as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, I've emphasized the importance of the growing markets for organic, locally grown and sustainable agriculture as exciting new opportunities in agriculture," Peterson said.

Umm, you have? That's news to me, Mr. Chairman. Oh how I wish I could make it to Collin Peterson's "Home Grown Economy 2010 - Equipping You to Build Community Based Food Systems" conference. Too bad I'll be in New Orleans drunk off my ass at Mardi Gras at another conference. If Peterson is so into community based food systems, then why was he so NOT into funding the Community Food Projects competitive grant program in the last farm bill?

Peterson Sponsoring Third Home Grown Economy Conference

(WASHINGTON, DC) - After two successful local foods conferences in 2007 and 2008, Congressman Collin Peterson announced today that he will sponsor another conference on the topic.  The Home Grown Economy 2010 - Equipping You to Build Community Based Food Systems, will be held at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, on February 15th and 16th.

"My goal in sponsoring this conference again is to continue to explore ways in which local foods can become an economic development engine for farmers, rural communities and development organizations, and how we can all work together to meet growing market demands," Peterson said.

In order for constituents to participate across the 35 county Seventh Congressional District, Interactive Video Sessions will be held on Tuesday, February 16th at the following campuses:  University of Minnesota, Crookston - University of Minnesota, Morris - Bemidji State University and Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Fergus Falls.
USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsak has been invited to provide the key-note address.  Ken Meter of Crossroads Research Center will present his insights on how food networks thrive and strengthen local economies.   Panel presenters will provide information about what is happening at the local level and each regional site will be afforded an opportunity to discuss how they can expand upon their local community based food system.

"In my role as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, I've emphasized the importance of the growing markets for organic, locally grown and sustainable agriculture as exciting new opportunities in agriculture," Peterson said.  Watch for further details at Peterson's website at http://collinpeterson.house.gov

I just sent this to Peterson's staff (4.00 / 2)
Hello,
I just saw a press release about Rep. Peterson's Home Grown Economy conference and his work in building community food systems. I think that is wonderful, but it made me a little bit confused. I thought Peterson was in favor of giving the Community Food Projects grant program no mandatory funding in the last farm bill. If I recall right, he gave it $0, Harkin gave it $10 million (which would have doubled it), and they settled on $5 million in mandatory funding in conference, which kept it at the status quo. CFP seems to be a cost effective way to expand community food systems and build homegrown economies. Do you have any information on Peterson's stance on that, or on which strategies he favors to grow home grown economies and community based food systems?

Thanks,

The UpTake (4.00 / 2)
If Peterson is serious, it would be great if he could arrange for the conference to be televised by The UpTake, or arrange for a video feed that The UpTake could transmit to the inet.

Do you know anything about the previous two conferences, Jill? Constructive, productive, maybe not?

no idea (4.00 / 2)
I didn't even know they existed!

Peterson: Paying more for organic or local is dumb (4.00 / 3)
Wonder if he forgot about this statement?

Thanks for linking that (4.00 / 2)
I thought I'd remembered him saying that, or words to that effect, but couldn't remember were I'd read it.

Regarding locavores as elitists - explain to me how supporting local business is elitist....
