  • A preview of sorts, in case you're interested - I'm currently working on a 3,000-or-so word piece on what's right and what's wrong (imo, of course) with this project.  Should be up by Tuesday or Wednesday.  Gilbert is the Arizona town I lived in for nine months in 1993-94, so I have a bit to say there on that...

  • This Thursday, October 1, Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will host a Facebook chat on USDA's local foods initiative.

  • Here's an update on recently introduced school lunch-related legislation in Congress.

  • Vanessa Barrington at Civil Eats writes on farmworker justice.

  • Over at Grist, Sean Sellers thinks The Nation missed a huge opportunity in their food issue this year.  I haven't picked up a copy of The Nation myself since about 2005, when I let my subscription lapse.  I believe they lost their "edge" long ago.  Anybody think differently?

  • Columnist and political speechwriter William Safire passed away today from cancer at the age of 79.

  • The O brings us two good pieces - one on Joel Salatin's recent visit to Oregon (Corvallis, home of Oregon State University); and another on one Lunch Lady's Sea-to-School program in Alaska.

Meatless Mondays (4.00 / 2)
At Baltimore city schools. A pretty good article from The Baltimore Sun. The city schools are going local and putting in kitchens, including a central kitchen.

tilapia madness (4.00 / 1)
For Geraci to grow his own tilapia this winter seems over the top, considering all the other projects he has, dare I say, on his plate. Or, maybe he sees a window of opportunity that he needs to take advantage of quickly, before it goes away.

I hope both Geraci and Superintendent Alonso stick around long enough to accomplish something. System stability has been sadly lacking for decades. The support given to Geraci by Alonso is heartening, if they can stay together as partners. Obstacles are formidable, not the least of which is that the vast majority of system students have not only never eaten a lot of the food Geraci aims to provide, but have never even seen or heard of it. The comments from the twins will be typical - they would have preferred burgers or pizza because that's what they are familiar with. The openmindedness of the other boy is great to read about.

Previews and postviews (4.00 / 1)
I thought you would be working on a movie review for Ingredients.

Yeah, that's coming... (4.00 / 1)
I just got back from the screening.

Was planning on hangin' around Hawthorne, doin' dinner or something afterwards... but damn.

I'm done.

Long day.  Gettin' old and stuff, heh...

I have two film reviews to write (the second is No Impact Man), and that Gilbert piece to do before I leave for Jersey next Friday.  Should be able to squeeze it all in between numerous failed attempts to find work.  Heh...

Growing Power (4.00 / 2)
I went to Growing Power today. I will post on it when I can upload my pictures, which won't be for several days. Needless to say, it was AMAZING!!!

Growing Power (4.00 / 2)
Is that a farmers market run by these people? I ask because the website doesn't list a Madison market.

Anyone who is interested in farming on a very small scale (4.00 / 2)
especially year round, really needs to learn as much from Will's farm as they can. Go there and intern, read all the printed material from them you can get your hands on, what ever you can do.

Will does what he does better than anyone I've ever seen or heard of. He's a master, a mestro, of that type of farming. And he's put in the years to get there. He does things as far as small scale farming, that the experts said couldn't be done.
