  • The USDA realized it did a no-no when it endorsed the use of GMOs in organics. They removed the report "The Unexplored Potential of Organic-Biotech Production" from their website AND posted the following statement:

On May 26, 2009, the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) posted a Global Agriculture Information Network (GAIN) report titled, "The Unexplored Potential of Organic-Biotech Production."  This report should have been accompanied by a clear statement that the report does not represent the policy of the United States Government, and given this, the report has been removed from the agency's Web site. It should be noted that USDA's National Organic Program regulations exclude the use of genetically engineered organisms in organic production. Additionally, FAS has no role in the administration of the National Organic Program.

  • HuffPo takes a look at the tangible effects of Food, Inc. I'm quoted in here talking about "a friend" (my therapist) who decided to change the way she eats after seeing the film.

  • The 2006 E. coli spinach outbreak isn't over yet. No, people aren't still sick, but they ARE still suing. This blog post is about an 85-year-old woman whose medical care for the E. coli poisoning cost $500k. She's suing to recover those costs. More proof that poisoning your customers is bad for business.

  • How bad is acrylamide, exactly? This is a good question to look into since chances are that you've eaten some of it.

  • Civil Eats asks whether supermarkets are the answer for food deserts.

  • This Monday, Slow Food USA is hosting "Eat-Ins" around the country as lobby events for better school lunch. Kerry Trueman writes about the Slow Food Time for Lunch campaign at The Green Fork. By the way, I'll be at a Slow Food Eat-In in Duvall, WA.

changed the way I eat... (4.00 / 4)
and speaking of food and diet, I'm wearing pants that haven't seen my ass, in 2 years. I don't know how much weight I lost because I threw out my scale. But the vegan challenge or in my case vegan during day, local and organic at night works for weight loss. I don't think I am getting enough calcium through so I have upped my greens  and will be drinking organic milk at night.

Jay and Jill..how about u???

I've been eating horribly on the road (4.00 / 2)
sad to say. I did a bit better when I was just home for a week. But now I'm back out on the road and my eating habits have gone back to crap. I do the best I can but it's not that great. At least I'm eating a lot of fruit.

I'm kinda sorta... (4.00 / 2)
getting there, but I have some other stuff to fix besides the diet.  I've got terrible sleeping habits these days, and a couple other problems that I realize are screwing up my system.  For me, eating well is probably the only thing I do right, right now!  Heh...

I lost about 5 pounds during those 6 vegan weeks, but I cheated a bunch of times, too (cream in coffee a few times, with a cream cheese bagel or pasta dinner here or there)... so it's probably not fair to use my results to draw any conclusions.

I'm still carrying about an extra 20 lbs. or so over where I was two years ago.  The BMI thing tells me I'm at the high end of 'normal', but I think they're being far too generous.  I'm gonna get my shit together asap and get back down to my ideal weight (I'm 6'2", so that would be 180 or so) soon, aiming for about 6 - 8 weeks from now.  That'll put me back to where I pretty much was from like 2001 up until last year...

Re: greens - I'm eating more these days, too.  I've always loved greens, but for some reason stopped eating much of them a few months back.  I'm on a rice & beans w/ greens kick these days.

Dinner yesterday was a "clear out the fridge bc we're going to the farmers' market tomorrow meal" - emmer & fresh rattlesnake beans w/ sauteed kale, pepper, onions, mushrooms, carrots and cucumber, with a bit of shredded cheddar and some sour cream on top.  Was one of the better meals I've had in months, actually. :)

Here we go again (4.00 / 3)
When I went to lunch today there was a big ol' sign at the checkout counter saying the FDA had recalled some brands of green onions because they had been found to be contaminated with salmonella, and as a precaution the cafeteria people were pulling all green onions out of their menus until further notice.

This is getting ridiculous. What is this, the fourth recall of a non-meat item due to salmonella in the last four or five years? Spinach, peanuts, tomatoes and now green onions, and I might be forgetting something. FDA and the food industry seem intent on combatting the symptoms but they need to get to the root cause and get rid of the disease.

I have succumbed to the Twitter craze. @Omir55

Organics and GMO (4.00 / 2)
"The Unexplored Potential of Organic-Biotech Production" has indeed disappeared from the USDA site.

I haven't been able to find the announcement explaining the disappearance of the report. That doesn't mean anything, though, because my search skills are approximately nil.

organic consumer association (4.00 / 2)
posted it up somewhere. I got it via email.
