Is the McDonalds 365Black site an indication of McRacism? I think it's pretty disgusting that one of the biggest and best-known (if not THE biggest and best known) peddlers of junk food is targeting an ethnic community that already suffers from higher than average diet-related health problems. The site 365Black isn't new, but the attention it's getting is. Here's what the blog Prostituted Thoughts had to say:

Have you guys heard about 365 Black? McDonald new attempt to celebrate the being of African Americans. I am just discovering it with the help of SteelCloset. Cas, one of there writers there talks about a "lack of tact." Well...to put it simply, I'm offended. I am well aware that McDonalds has a minority agency (if not multiple) that does some hardcore minority focused work. I gave them a pass for the ridiculousness that was the R&B Themed 10 Piece Nugget spot. I actually laughed with them. I looked the other way for the double fist pump. I said to myself, "If they think this is the way to Market to Minorities...good luck to them." But this 365 Black initiative rocks the boat a little too much in my opinion. Is that really Keith Sweat talking about sharing his love of Chicken McNuggets? Is the love of Chicken McNuggets what you mean when you say, We Are Deeply Rooted In the Community? Who cares if Laurie Anne Gibson, a dancer from a reality know best for sayin "BOOM-BOOM-CAT" and being fired by Diddy, worked at McDonalds?

Having gone through their website (4.00 / 1)
I don't have a problem with it. I don't see anything racist about it, any more than McDonalds saying that they encourage women to be entrepreneurs as being sexist.

I think, bottom line, is that the company want's workers who show up on time, are dependable, etc.. When I go into a McDonalds I see a wide range of people working there, that spans race, age, gender, etc. Those stores have been staffed that way for as long as I can remember.

Perhaps the woman in the corporate video saying that going to McDonalds for their favorite foods, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, etc. could be construed as racist, but given that the person saying that is a woman, you could use the same logic to say the the comment is sexist as well. Lots of people do love McDonalds' food, if they didn't the company wouldn't be a succesful as it is. The food may not be the healthiest stuff in the world to eat, but neither are anyone else's hamburgers and fries. There is a restaurant over in Marquam that Harold and I like to go to. They have a burger that is so big I don't even want to know how much fat, sodium and calories are in it. If I were to eat one of those every day, I'd be in as bad a shape as if I ate at McDonalds or any other fast food joint every day.

As far as McDonalds encouraging blacks to become business men/women by opening a franchise, I see nothing wrong with that either. I think that people running their own business is laudable, for those with the mettle for it - not everyone wants the hastle and risk, of which there is a lot for those of us in business for our selves. When you go into business for yourself, you have debt risks, no wage protection, no labor protections as far as how long you're allowed to work (an exception being independant truckers), no workers comp, no unemployment insurance, a lot of expenses such as health care that would be completely deductible if provided to employees are not completely deductible if you provide it for yourself as a business person, and you can get sued if you screw up and hurt someone even if you take steps to shield yourself from liability by forming an LLC or other type of corporation. On the other hand, if your employees screw up and hurt someone, you'll get sued, not the employee even if the employee was operating outside of company policy.

I think that if you want to open a McDonalds franchise and subject yourself to all of those risks, then more power to you and 'May God have mercy on your soul' as the saying goes. I don't see McDonalds encouraging blacks to do that, or giving out scholarships to blacks, isn't any more racist than encouraging women to open up franchises is sexist.

There are many, many organizations and businesses that support one ethnic group or another, or one gender or another, or one group or another of many different kinds of people, heritages, etc. As long as we're going to say that those organizations are OK, then I think we should leave McDonalds alone. At least they're not trying to glorify violent or criminal behavior like a lot of entertainers and movie makers do for a buck.

Regarding locavores as elitists - explain to me how supporting local business is elitist....

I'm with Jill, sort of (4.00 / 1)
although I wouldn't go so far as to call it racist.

But it does leave a sour taste (pardon the pun) of condescension, shameless pandering, and even exploitation.

Still, many companies target seniors, for example, not because they give a shit about retired people or their issues, but because they can take advantage of a targeted niche to segment the market and squeeze out a few more bucks in profit.

This is kind of the same thing. Somehow it is more offensive to me because it is targeting blacks. Perhaps that's my own racism coming through?

I really don't think racism has much if anything to do with it. It's all about the bottom line.

I agree with you Sarge (0.00 / 0)
It's just marketing. I'm sure that there are a lot of people working within the business infrastructure at McDonalds who are very concerned with issues surrounding various minorities in this country including those issues of concern in the black community.

But the bottom line is that this is marketing first and foremost. Otherwise they'd just work within the communities and not be advertising it.

Regarding locavores as elitists - explain to me how supporting local business is elitist....
