Pot Luck: Final Weekend of June Already?

I had the chance to check out the (relatively) new Urban Farm Store up at SE Morrison and 20th while waiting for a bus earlier today, cool place.  The problem with places like that though, is that it gets me all upset to realize I can't grow anything (yet).  Bah!  Their kale growing right along the sidewalk is huge, though.  Matter of fact, many of the home gardens along Belmont are coming on great.  Not the best street to walk down when you're hungry, heh...

Bananas are also in season here in Portland, on walls along SE 12th near Division -

This is a cool program... (4.00 / 4)
New program matches Oregon farmers with local businesses -

The group said so far it had signed up 76 families at four Portland area businesses.

In addition to linking farms with businesses, the program includes free lunchtime presentations on things like eating sustainably on a budget.

oh my .. (4.00 / 4)
that store looks awesome..

and I have so much space I don't know what to do with it all. I would have chickens in a heart beat if I wasn't alone. Blueberries should start turning this week followed by my blackberries.

Birds are singing outside my window right now... (4.00 / 4)
yesterday was very hot (like 80-ish, and we don't do a/c here in Portland), so I had the windows open and the ceiling fan on all day...

I'm (still!) up at 4:45 AM, and I hear birds singing just outside my window right now.  And the temperature is perfect.  Omg, it's like 68 here in the living room right now.  Perfect for human habitation...

:)

Blueberries should start turning this week followed by my blackberries.

Summer is awesome, isn't it? :)

Unfortunately . . . (4.00 / 4)
The only birds we've gotten around here lately are crows. Although yesterday when I was coming out of work and heading to my bus stop there was some kind of bird sitting in a tree just outside the entrance, singing his little heart out.

I need to get a bird feeder the crows can't get into. Actually we have a bird feeder, just no idea how to hook it up.

Jay yep...except (4.00 / 5)
its been so rainy here..I've never seen a June like this..and on the other side of the world surrounded by a desert is my daughter.

I'm going to go soon to the farmers market in Glenside. The veganish challenge is going pretty well. But I really eggs tonight for dinner. and MAYBE today they will have Jersey tomatoes. I have tomatoes growing..but rain like this isn't good for them.

Requiem for Sourdough Starter (4.00 / 4)
Yep. It died. I have no idea how. Took it out of the freezer and added water and flour to rekindle the activity. Went great overnight. Did the same thing the next day. Day three: Bupkis. The dough had separated overnight with a brownish watery layer on top. And the worse part was that it no longer smelled sour, like it did the first time around.

I thought I'd done everything right: ceramic bowl, wooden spoon, pour off excess batter to keep from overflowing.

The only thing wrong that occurred to me was that the wooden spoon is bamboo. Does bamboo have an enzyme or something that could kill off the yeast? There some other reason it didn't work?

Yankee Frugality: use it up, wear it out, make it last, or do without.

Bamboo shouldn't be a problem. (4.00 / 4)
Maybe it's just one of those things. I had one that did that to me a couple of months ago.

I may have to start my starter again, actually. I went to cull and feed it today and it smelled like bad diapers. Maybe it was just mad because I didn't feed it yesterday. I fed it anyway and it doesn't smell like diapers anymore, so we'll see if it comes back or if I need to start over.

Keep us sourdough wannabes posted? (4.00 / 3)
I asked Mrs.B to get some starter at Trader Joes. She wasn't too impressed with my first efforts anyway, even the bread came out yummy. :-(

do you want some of my starter? (4.00 / 3)
the watery stuff is ok...but u do have to feed it..But I never heard of freezing it

I keep my starter in the fridge in a big mason jar. Once a week I feed it. I take out 1 cup and add 1 cup flour and one cup water

I was almost certain Omir said freezer (4.00 / 2)
for storing. Anyhoo, I started a new batch this morning. No freezer this time. It was soury after a couple of days. Thanks for the offer though.
