  • Farmers' markets in Oregon have been affected by the Bush Depression...in a good way.  Record crowds have been counted at markets here in Portland this year, and purchases are up over 20 percent from last year.  Also, people on food assistance have spent almost 3 times as much at some markets as compared to last year, and markets are receiving many more vendor booth applications than they have space for.

  • David Suzuki and SeaChoice have teamed up with a regional chain of supermarkets, who will no longer carry yellowfin tuna, Chilean sea bass, orange roughy and other non-sustainable seafood at their 117 locations throughout British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

  • Should the Washington Farmers Market Association allow nuts from around the world to be sold at farmers' market booths?  One local hazelnut grower thinks not.

  • "They've survived ice ages, asteroids colliding. They've seen the dinosaurs come and go. And now they're going extinct in unprecedented numbers." - that's Kerry Kriger, founder of Save the Frogs.  They may have met their match in us.  Native amphibians in Oregon are disappearing at an alarming rate.

  • The (Vancouver / Victoria, BC) Tyee takes a look at the ongoing battle between two rival forestry certification non profits who certify eco-friendly wood products - the industry-created "Sustainable Forestry Initiative", and the "Forest Stewardship Council", a group formed by environmental activists.

  • Nevin Cohen takes a look at New York City's recently unveiled "Food Retail Expansion to Support Health" (FRESH) plan to bring more supermarkets into low-income sections of the South Bronx, Upper Manhattan, Central Brooklyn, and Downtown Jamaica (Queens).

  • Big Ag's gonna hate this!  Food, Inc. was the top-grossing independent film at the box office this weekend, finishing ahead of even Francis Ford Coppola's (director of the Godfather trilogy) new film.  Reviews of the film can be found here from Jill and from me.  See it!

Ooops... (4.00 / 3)
Sorry for the double post, if anyone saw it.  That was odd...

Good thing I checked after I posted!

Lol @ CNBC... (4.00 / 4)
they're showing an 'expose' on the (profitable, dangerous and deadly!) "marijuana trade" (boo!)...

I thought we were over 'reefer madness' by now?

I mean, come on - they could have had a much better show if they did it on a real drug, like cocaine or meth or hey, maybe even antibiotic abuse in factory farm animals!

Nah, it's all about reefer madness still, I guess...

Was it called Marijuana Nation? (4.00 / 3)
Because they have a serious that is like Meth Nation, Cocaine Nation, Marijuana Nation...etc.

Can you believe we have 25% of the world's prison population? God that's just sad. There must be another way. I heard that the Seattle Police Chief who is now Drug Czar said that they won't be using the term War On Drugs anymore. I think that's a step in the right direction.

Yeah, I think... (4.00 / 3)
Didn't catch, or at least remember, the name - that was probably it.

At least they stopped showing those stupid assed commercials linking smoking a joint to aiding terrorists in blowing up buildings (remember those?  they even aired during the 2002 Super Bowl); especially since the real terrorists who've actually blown up American buildings were created and built up by 'Saint Ronnie' and Co. themselves....

Maybe I WILL join the AARP! (4.00 / 1)
Heh, they do send me occasional solicitations, no clue why...

Anyways, via Chris Smith at Portland Transport - AARP is now advocating for Complete Streets.

Wow... I'm honestly shocked (4.00 / 2)
AARP is backing something good, huh? Maybe they used to do good things for seniors (other than discounts) at some point, but then they got into the insurance industry (life and medical) and now they're much more interested in selling insurance to their members and lobbying for pro-insurance causes than in helping seniors.

They have one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in DC, and most of their members have no idea exactly what AARP is lobbying for.

I wish I knew half what the flock of them know
Of where all the berries and other things grow,
Cranberries in bogs and raspberries on top
Of the boulder-strewn mountain, and when they will crop.

It's reality rearing its head again... :) (4.00 / 1)
As Chris (a guy I was strongly supporting in his (unfortunately, unsuccessful) Portland City Council primary race last year) mentioned in that post, they must be realizing that the older we get, the more we're going to need neighborhoods built for things other than just speeding, dangerous private automobile commuters...

Farmers Market's (mostly) way up on the East Coast, too (4.00 / 3)
The DC area is being hit less hard by the recesssion, but the same logic seems to apply.  We had a great year last year, even in our most established market.  Several new markets have opened, often on a wing and hope rather than a business plan.  Nonetheless, the demand for slots and product is really flying.

A few of our markets are mysteriously sleepy, but that's the exception.

We got a grant to match our food stamps and I am putting together a plan to publicize it.  (Yeah!)

Michael

Great news! (4.00 / 2)

Excellent!  Good luck...
