Michael Pollan on Bill Maher

If you missed the most recent episode of Bill Maher, you need to see it - at least the part with Michael Pollan. Eddie C sent me an excerpt of the best part:

Maher: We can't have [single payor putting insurance companies out of business]! Health care is the biggest industry we've got. We need sick people and the food companies are doing their part to help.

Oh yes, they put the time in the lab to find out just how much fat, sugar, and salt to load into a Happy Meal to make it more like crack. Do you know that even our baby foods are now up to one third sugar? Only Americans could develop comfort food for somebody who's already eating off a tit. I mean, what kind of people hooks babies on sugar? It's not a mystery why even one in five four-year-olds is obese. Four-year-olds! The elephant in the room is your kid. Not only can't Johnny read, he can't see his dick. If Al-Qaeda slipped something into our food that did that to us, well we would torture some Arabs and keep on eating.

It's good to see people in the media providing such a favorable environment for these issues.

I miss out on so much that you guys are talking about! (4.00 / 2)
We have only 5 local channels and none of the national cable programs (we can't receive cable). We could subscribe to satellite TV, but why?  For 500 channels of garbage so we can watch a few good programs? I've got waay too many books to read! And too much to do out in my garden. TV is a waste of time-especially watching the ignorant talking heads.

I've got no TV at all (4.00 / 1)
if that's any consolation.

I would say you are a better person for not having it. There's just too much else to do that's really interesting in this world, like running a relevant, very useful blog.  When I sit in front of the tube, I find that I become a zombie.  Nothing challenging like reading Wendell Berry (which I did last night). In fact, even though we have a TV, I rarely watch it, especially during gardening season.

I miss all of this, too.

:)

But that's because my tv time is wasted watching basketball, baseball or movies on AMC, all of which I've already seen about 14,346 times...

So that makes 3 of us who don't see any of it!
