I've been hibernating the past few days. My internet's still broken and my dad's mailing me my old laptop to see if that will fix the problem. In the meantime, I am writing this post from an internet cafe and I am very (VERY) annoyed. I'm sitting next to a woman with big hair who smells like hair care products and a family with a million small kids just came in. The kids are going crazy. In addition to internet, this place's main business is gelato. Anyway, here's what's on my plate besides mocha rum crunch gelato:

Here's a preview (4.00 / 4)
of a diary I'm posting tomorrow: http://food.change.org/blog/vi...

I posted an early version of my jam making adventures on Change. I'll post the full the whole story tomorrow on this blog, with pictures. AFTER the jam's all done.

I'm so jealous... (4.00 / 2)
that you're most likely at Gelato Vera on India Street right?  Man, what I wouldn't give for some veggie spring rolls from Saffron and a small Mocha Rum Crunch gelato right about now! (minus the big haired lady and screaming kids) - LOL

I'm glad to hear that you're back in town safe and sound (hey, that rhymed!).  And that you had a great / productive time at your conference.

they're still open for a bit (4.00 / 2)
so come and get some gelato :)

I think I'm gonna head home but yeah, that's where I'm at. Tastiest free wireless internet in town :) I'm gonna get fat on gelato if I don't get my situation fixed so I can use the internet at home sometime soon.

Big hair? (4.00 / 3)
I'm sitting next to a woman with big hair who smells like hair care products

Heh, she's probably from Jersey.  I may know her!

:)

Great collection, as always.

Re: Coke - There's a bunch of PSU students here currently fighting that school's contract with Coca Cola on human rights grounds.  I may be able to have something in-depth on that soon...

Jersey Girls.. (4.00 / 4)

Jersey Girls...

I'm actually in Philly

i have a pet problem (4.00 / 5)
and am wondering if anyone here might have advice?

There is a male feral cat who hangs around my neighborhood.  A few weeks ago I noticed him limping a little.  Yesterday he was at my back door, looking for food (I don't usually feed the strays, but our back door has been open a lot lately as the weather has been nice, and all manner of animals tend to wander in to eat.)

His front leg is...bad.  I think I saw bone.  The paw seems dead.  He seems otherwise healthy - clean coat, clear eyes.  I'm wondering if whatever was wrong with him has since healed?  Maybe he just needs the leg amputated?

I fed him and he allowed me to watch from behind the glass.

I'm so heartbroken at the sight of this animal in distress.  I would take him in but I already have seven cats, some of whom barely tolerate the others.  And I can't afford a vet bill - we just got hit with $4,000 in car repair bills, and my hubby is unemployed.

I don't know what to do?  Does anyone have any advice?

Does your city have... (4.00 / 4)

Hi Chicklet,

My heart goes out to your situation.  Does your city have a local animal humane society or pet shelter?  I would also look on the internet or your local yellow pages for any animal rescue groups that may be of assistance.

I agree with you, watching an any animal in distress is heartbreaking.  :(

oh my god (4.00 / 3)
see if there's a charity organization or an animal hospital. Around here there's a wild animal hospital and they take in all kinds of animals - bears, mountain lions, coyotes, you name it.

thanks guys (4.00 / 2)
I'll call our spca tomorrow and see if they have any advice.  I haven't seen him today, but I'm keeping an eye out.

Like I said - he seems to be in otherwise good health, and I'd hate to see him put to sleep if it's not necessary.  I just can't stop thinking about him.  :(

From BoingBoing: Neuroscience of junk-food cravings (4.00 / 5)
This book looks fascinating:

"David A Kessler, author of The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite, is a doctor and lawyer, med school dean and former FDA commissioner. He's also someone whose weight has yo-yoed back and forth all his life, someone who is plagued with insatiable junk-food cravings. His new book -- grounded in research that included dumpster-diving chain restaurants to read the ingredient labels on the foods whose makeup they wouldn't discuss, tries to answer the neurological question of why we crave shitty junk food:"

The labels showed the foods were bathed in salt, fat and sugars, beyond what a diner might expect by reading the menu, Kessler said. The ingredient list for Southwestern Eggrolls mentioned salt eight different times; sugars showed up five times. The "egg rolls," which are deep-fried in fat, contain chicken that has been chopped up like meatloaf to give it a "melt in the mouth" quality that also makes it faster to eat. By the time a diner has finished this appetizer, she has consumed 910 calories, 57 grams of fat and 1,960 milligrams of sodium.

Instead of satisfying hunger, the salt-fat-sugar combination will stimulate that diner's brain to crave more, Kessler said. For many, the come-on offered by Lay's Potato Chips -- "Betcha can't eat just one" -- is scientifically accurate. And the food industry manipulates this neurological response, designing foods to induce people to eat more than they should or even want, Kessler found...
