I must admit... (4.00 / 4)
...that I admire the capitalist acumen of the folks who run the pub down the block from me.

I took the quick walk over there for a sandwich at about 4:15, but noticed that the Mets game was on.  They must have known that as "The Official Creston-Kenilworth / SE Portland Neighborhood Mets Fan", there was no way I was leaving there that easily without staying to watch a bit of the game.  So of course, I ended up staying for a couple beers to watch through the 7th inning.  And it was worth it in that I saw Gary Sheffield hit his 500th career homerun to start the 7th (and tie the game!).

If I wasn't broke, I might have stayed longer to watch the entire game, but alas - I am broke.  And I also need to save a bit for tomorrow night of course, when I will head back there for dinner and to watch Game 1 of the Blazers' first-round playoff series.  Yeeeeeaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhh!!!

But Jill... (4.00 / 3)

hahahahahaha (4.00 / 3)
if it were my garden, THERE WOULD BE NO ARUGULA!!!!

Actually, I went somewhere that made arugula taste GOOD the other day. They made a pesto w/ it and spread that on flatbread pizza w goat cheese & chioggia beets. Mmmm. Couldn't even taste the arugula. I ate so much. Here's the place: http://www.thelinkery.com/

heh...anything that includes (4.00 / 2)
terrific goat cheese & terrific bread works for me.  But when I can afford it, I'm a foodie -- just haven't been able to afford it for years.

At the risk of being laughed off of this blog...you mention chioggia beets.

Well, I don't know what they are.  But a specialty here where I live is a type of pickled egg called "red beet eggs."

Laugh if you want to: they're really pretty good.  As I commented to Ria elsewhere tonight, although afaik none of the Pennsylvania Dutch do this, I think red beet eggs would make awesome deviled eggs.

Beware, Jill Richardson:  I just might post a PA Dutch cooking diary on your site sometime.  (Don't worry: it will be short.  Most PA Dutch are horrible cooks.)

The portobello sandwiches there sound great!

I made arugula pesto last summer (4.00 / 2)
and froze in ice cube trays and then bagged. Great for a quick pasta meal, etc. Iirc, I also used garlic scapes in the pesto . . .
