Here's a sampler platter made up entirely of my big backlog of stuff I have intended to report on this blog but for some reason, never got around to sharing:

good shrimp article (4.00 / 3)
although I wouldn't call it about eco-friendly shrimp. More about supporting domestic fishermen by eliminating the middleman and buying direct in order to avoid unregulated shrimp from countries that have few or no safety regulations about shrimp-raising. Another good story on the problems with importing food and the impossibility of properly inspecting food that is raised in such places. I sometimes think instituting NAFTA was a mistake without first getting the world to the point where everybody was following a reasonable set of food safety laws (and I mean reasonable, which does not include having to provide a special bathroom in the slaughterhouse for the USDA slaughterhouse inspectors).

The counterargument is that NAFTA is shoving these issues right in the faces of we (relatively) rich gringos, and helping people in the more forsaken (and ripped off) countries at least make a little more money. I respect that argument too.

I think NAFTA was definitely a mistake (4.00 / 1)
it totally undermines the food sovereignty of Mexico.

"I can understand someone from Iowa promoting corn and soy, but we are not feeding the world, we are feeding animals and soft drink companies." - Jim Goodman
