Whole Foods Photo Diary

Today I visited the Whole Foods Headquarters, here in Austin. It's my second time there, but this time I brought a camera :)

Anti-Monkey Butt Powder, a local product

I started off at the juice bar - similar but much more elaborate than the juice bar at the San Diego store

This Whole Foods makes its own gelato. Today's special flavors included creme brulee French toast, apple ginger, and blueberry oatmeal cinnamon.

Most Whole Foods have a pastry case where you can buy rolls, bagels, and cookies. Except usually they aren't quite this big.

Coffee bar. Yum.

Many flavors of roasted nuts, all roasted in house.

Nori rolls for lunch.

I was very impressed at the decorative nature of the fish display.

Bulk teas.

Fresh baked breads.

Goodies dipped in their chocolate fountain.

Individual sized cakes.

The one on the left is a tres leches cake. I was nearly drooling on the glass.

Grand total of my purchases: mint chip gelato, Guatamala/Antigua coffee, nori rolls, a book by Jane Goodall, incandescent lightbulbs to use in my hotel room (the CFLs the room has give me migraines), and a little something for Clammyc's new baby.

Wow. That Whole Foods (4.00 / 2)
is a lot nicer than mine.

In the realm of what I will and won't willingly do for sustainability, CFLs are firmly in the "won't" category. I can and do cut elsewhere. They don't give me migraines, but they bug me.

Sounds like you're having a blast.

CFLs are evil. Pure, unadulterated evil. (0.00 / 0)
I do have an LED lightbulb at home. It isn't very bright though. And it cost me $20. They need to improve the technology on LEDs before they are a more viable option. But I figure at least I'm doing something good with the LED to counteract my bad with the incandescents.

As for this Whole Foods being big... it's their flagship store where the corporate offices are located.

They've started using LEDs (4.00 / 1)
in the elevators in my office building. Very nightclubby looking in the converted elevator cars!

Wow! I actually found the place TOO much! (4.00 / 1)
Oh, it was bountiful, beautifully displayed, stimulating to the senses, all right.  But I swear, if I had to shop there all the time, I'd probably starve to death, paralyzed by the sheer sensory and psychological overload of choices.

I can get sensory overload at a great farmer's market, also, but that is a feeling I find inspiring.  I found the Austin Whole Foods to be almost obscene.  Maybe it's just that the canny marketing is so apparent in Whole Foods,  Compared to a first-class farmers market, visiting this Whole Foods had the feeling of visiting Disneyland or visiting 'Paris,' 'Venice,' 'New York' or 'Cairo' in Las Vegas.
