Who Isn't on the Senate Hunger Caucus?

In 2004, the Senate formed a bipartisan Senate Hunger Caucus to call attention to the issue of hunger. One of the co-founders is Blanche Lincoln (D-AR). Her website lists the entire membership - which basically includes 1/3 of the Senate. If these Senators are really so concerned about hunger, then why isn't the problem solved yet?

The other chairs besides Blanche Lincoln are Dick Durbin (D-IL), Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), and Gordon Smith (R-OR).

Well... (4.00 / 1)
that little toad Gordon Smith (R-OR) isn't on the list, for one.  If he cared to check, he'd realize that Oregon is still in the 'upper half' (or lower, if you will...) of hunger surveys, and was number one in this sad statistic in the USDA survey just three years ago -

Just three years ago, Oregon actually ranked number one in a USDA survey on food insecurity. While Oregon has improved to number 22, there are still an estimated 192,000 Oregonians who eat meals from an emergency food box each month.

But that's okay, because we're going to replace that phony with Jeff Merkley in a few months.  It'll be great to have in the US Senate the guy who fought for years and eventually passed legislation that shut down more than half of 'payday/title lending' establishments in Oregon (I live a few blocks from a strip of 4 boarded-up 'payday leecheslenders', who all shut down within the past year...) that prey on struggling people for rent and food money, and also has done great work on ensuring children in Oregon public schools have access to healthier (i.e. real...) food at school.

Oh, whoops... (4.00 / 1)
He's a chair.

Didn't notice the top part...

Well, he still hasn't done anything to solve the problem.  Just another 'resume-building' thing to look good for elections...

I spoke to Merkley about it this weekend. (4.00 / 1)
You are right. Smith votes against raising the minimum wage. How's that for helping hunger?

The fact that Gordon Smith's personal fortune (4.00 / 2)
comes from a food-packing business may or may not have a bearing on his membership in this caucus.

Since, last I heard, his business was frozen vegetables off Eastern Oregon farms, it may not be a total evil.

Hey, Anne - this is pretty funny... (4.00 / 2)
Check out the Smith Frozen Foods Sustainable Agriculture info page on the company website, linked right from their front page -

It's blank!

And they even have a copyright '2000-2006' on the bottom of the page!

Ideas for a commercial?

"Smith Frozen Foods, saying absolutely nothing about sustainable agriculture since 2000."

"Smith Frozen Foods.  Sustainable agriculture?  No comment."

"Smith Frozen Foods.  Check out our website for information on sustainable agriculture.  Ha!  Made you look..."

Lol...

Blanche Lincoln is my senator (4.00 / 2)
She's a conservative Democrat (as are most Arkansas Democrats). I didn't know she founded this caucus -- thanks for the information.

:)

They do not want us to have full stomachs, because we start to demand more. When is hunger, We just want to eat... Secondly, thanks to hunger, They have a great political slogan. Just kidding.
But Seriously, our government is incompetent. They prefer modernize and purchase army rather than feed us. Unless! They want feed us those bullets. But it doesn't seem right...:P
