Uniting Two Worlds

I've spent the past few years feeling like I have one foot in each of two worlds - the food world and the blog world. I feel at home in each, but I can't help but wish I could introduce the two to each other.

This new blog is an attempt to do that. To bring together the incredible expertise and lofty credentials of those in the food world with the motivation and Internet savvy of the blog world. And hopefully, if we can do that well, we will attract others along with us: politicians, journalists, and most importantly perhaps, average folks who are consumers and voters.

I hope that the posts on this site will span a broad range of topics - from topics as simple as a visit to a farmers' market to topics as complex as U.S. commodity policy. I also encourage everyone - regardless of your background - to jump right in and feel welcome. We are all here to educate one another and if you're a newbie to food issues, you can be assured that the rest of us will find your enthusiasm inspiring and no one will fault you if you're not an expert.

In all honesty, this is just one big experiment at the moment. Will those who are used to a more academic or professional environment enjoy posting on blogs where it's acceptable to use the F-word or post a picture of your cat? And will bloggers create a true community (as exists on DailyKos) where fun can be had at all hours of the day? Who can say.

For now, I've invited a handful of people to be on the front page. There are so many qualified people out there whose writing and ideas are worthy of the front page that I will most likely add more front pagers in the near future, once I get a sense of who actually takes the time to come over here and write diaries fairly regularly.

Welcome, thanks for stopping by, and I encourage you to make a new account, log in, and start blogging!

Looking forward to this blog! (4.00 / 3)
This is exciting! You do such great work, OrangeClouds115. I'm certain it will be fun and rewarding to read.

I look forward to your participation (4.00 / 2)
You and your wife have been absolutely instrumental in mentoring me from the very beginning. I hope to see you around here a lot!

Great idea! (4.00 / 2)
I'm so flattered to be asked to participate in your extraordinary enterprise!

Are you kidding me? (4.00 / 1)
Your amazing work "IRL" (in real life) makes you one of the absolute best people to have on a site like this because you confront a lot of societal problems face to face and you work to fix them and know what it takes. I'm glad you're here!!

Hey OC (4.00 / 5)
I saw you got a new blog. Glad to know we can still use the F word and post pictures of pooties.

Here's my fucking Cat.

awww... so cute! (4.00 / 2)
I was trying to get a good pic of my fucking cat looking at your fucking cat, but she wouldn't sit still. My little kitten Molly looks a lot like your kitty but she's so squirmy I barely have any pics of her yet.

fuckin' cute cat (4.00 / 4)

Very intent lookin' and all, like you're wearing live mouse earrings or somethin', but cute.

[ Parent ]
here's my angel (4.00 / 4)

And yes, she shredded the ENTIRE roll of toilet paper.

scooby says any food will do...just make sure it's tasty ...and dead...he doesn't much like to the do the killing part...he'd rather just play with the mice

My Molly isn't interested in food at the moment (4.00 / 2)
She just wants sex. OMG is this cat desperate and frustrated. I need to get her fixed.

[ Parent ]
Good luck, OC! (4.00 / 4)
I love your work at dKos, and I'm looking forward to this endeavor.

All best to you!

Thanks (4.00 / 2)
It'll be nice to get discussion going on a lot of the smaller issues that arise that would never get Rec'd up on dKos. I'm hoping this can bring recognition to some new writers too - people who have deserved to have their stuff read for a while but for whatever reason it hasn't happened yet on dKos. There are just so many good people there it's tough to get noticed sometimes.

Ah! (4.00 / 2)
You've got one of those ol' 0-1-2-3-4 rating systems!

Let's hope 'fingerslips' over here don't cause any real problems...

..................

You've got a great idea here, and I'll be a regular around here.

(cue "The Replacements" classic song - "Here Comes a Regular"...)

Heh.

I just hope my user-id # isn't a sign of things to come.

13?!

Good thing I'm not really that superstitious...

;-P

I'm glad you're here (4.00 / 1)
I look forward to your diaries here :)

[ Parent ]
Wow, this really brings back old memories... (4.00 / 1)
Love your retro interface!

(This is renaissance grrrl, btw, for those of you who don't know my Other Blog Name.)  Hope you see good success with this.

Uhhh yeah... (0.00 / 0)
I'm hoping someone who can help will come along. I don't have a lot of money to offer but I am willing to pay someone to come up with a logo and perhaps a prettier color scheme as well.

[ Parent ]
No, I mean it! (4.00 / 1)
It's so Old Daily Kos, and I did love it back then.

[ Parent ]
Here's one of the quartet of pooties, the coolest one. (4.00 / 2)
I'm here! (4.00 / 3)
So glad you started this.

Awesome!! (4.00 / 2)
I really hope you'll be willing/able to put up a few diaries on your experiences both in the past with food stamps and food banks and now with managing farmers' markets. I think you are such an asset to any community about food and I look forward to your contributions!!!

[ Parent ]
Aw, thanks! (4.00 / 1)
I hope to carve out some time to contribute more. Thanks for getting things rolling!

[ Parent ]
Well, good luck already. (4.00 / 2)
BTW, what's good to add to plain yogurt to make it palatable?

honey, although it's sticky (4.00 / 1)
agave nectar or maple syrup, or jam (provided the jam itself isn't totally awful for you). Sometimes I just leave the yogurt plain and add frozen berries and granola and then stir it around a bit. That is usually enough for me but it's not exactly sweet at that point.
